A song written by Tommy Makem about the occupation of Ulster. In this song, the "old woman" represents Mother Ireland, and the "Four Green Fields" represent the four provinces of Ireland (Leinster, Munster, Ulster, and Connaught). The "strangers" represent any occupying force that came, but most notably the English. The "children" obviosly are the native Irish, and the song references to the famine, as the children "starved." A very popular song, sung by many but most famously by Tommy himself with the Clancy Brothers.
From: Bogside Rogues Lyrics
"What did I have?" this proud old woman did say.
"I had four green fields, each one was a jewel.
'Till strangers came, and tried to take them from me.
I had fine, strong sons.
They fought to save my jewels.
They fought and they died,
and that is my grief" said she

"Long time ago" said the fine old woman,
"Long time ago" this proud old woman did say.
"There was war and death, plundering and pillage.
My children starved, from mountain, valley and sea.
And their wailing cries, they reached the highest heavens.
And my four green fields
ran red with their blood." said she

"What have I now?" said the fine old woman
"What have I now?" this proud old woman did say.
"I have four green fields, one of them's in bondage.
In stranger's hands, who tried to take it from me.
But my sons have sons, as brave as were their fathers.
And my fourth green field will bloom once again" said she.

NB.

"c'erano guerra e morte, razzia e distruzione.
E i miei quattro verdi campi
si fecero rossi del loro sangue", disse.

"Che cosa ho adesso?", disse gentile quella vecchia
"Che cosa ho adesso?", disse fiera quella vecchia.
"Ho quattro verdi campi, uno è in servitù

Avevo quattro verdi campi,
quattro gioielli, la vita mia,
ma son venuti gli stranieri
e me li han portati via.

Avevo figli belli e forti,

Adesso ho quattro verdi campi,
tre hanno avuto la libertà
e, col coraggio dei miei figli,
anche il quarto rifiorirà
