[RV]
Tú er tað fagrasta eg veit
Tú er tað dyrasta á foldum
Tú ert sum stjørnurnar - sum vindurin
- sum brimbroti - sum fuglarnir

sei il mio sangue, i miei polmoni,

me escarba hondo, acá, en lo blando;
me escarba simple, de escarbar,
como para que se hunda más
el día feliz que está llegando.

IL GIORNO FELICE CHE STA ARRIVANDO

Si avvicina un giorno felice
come fa una nave dopo mesi.
Sta arrivando un giorno d'aprile,
un giorno d'aprile sta arrivando
alla fine di novembre.

E io mi attacco di più al mare,
mi affratello il doppio coi pesci.
Accendo legna nel focolare
che ha visto infuriar la tempesta
che guida il corso di questi mesi.

Si avvicina un giorno felice,
un giorno di folletti antichi.
Si avvicina un uccello feroce
vicino al piacere del tuo odore:
si avvicina un tempo da conigli.

E mi eccita l'ansietà,
mi eccita pesa qui nel lieve;

tiefer versinkt.

Sång till friheten
Björn Afzelius

Du är det finaste jag vet.
Du är det dyraste i världen.
Du är som stjärnorna,
som vindarna,
som vågorna,
som fåglarna,
som blommorna på marken.

Du är min ledstjärna och vän.
Du är min tro, mitt hopp, min kärlek.
Du är mitt blod
och mina lungor,
mina ögon,
mina skuldror,
mina händer och mitt hjärta.

Friheten är ditt vackra namn.
Vänskapen är din stolta moder.
Rättvisan är din broder.
Freden är din syster.
Kampen är din fader.
Framtiden ditt ansvar.

“Sång till friheten” is an adaptation by Björn Afzelius, of the Silvio Rodriguez song. The lyrics are on his tombstone at his grave in Göteborg, Sweden. It was my introduction to his music in a Swedish course at Uppsala Universitet in Uppsala, and remains one of his all time favorites, as well as mine. [Ceil Herman]
SONG TO FREEDOM

You are the finest I know.
You are the dearest in the world.
You are like the stars,
like the winds,
like the waves,
like the birds,
like the flowers on the ground.

You are my guiding star and my friend.
You are my faith, my hope, my love.
You are my blood
and my lungs,
my eyes,
my shoulders,
my hands and my heart.

Freedom is your beautiful name.
Frendship is your proud mother.
Justice is your brother.
Peace is your sister.
The battle is your father.
The future is your responsibility.

I wonder which one should be first here, the original song titled El día feliz que está llegando by Silvio Rodríguez or a Faroese translation of its Swedish version. Hen or egg?

LAULU VAPAUDELLE

Sinä olet hienointa, mitä tiedän.
Sinä olet kalleinta maailmassa.
Sinä olet kuin tähdet,
kuin tuulet,
kuin aallot,
kuin linnut,
kuin kukat maan päällä.

Sinä olet johtotähteni ja ystäväni.
Sinä olet uskoni, toivoni, rakkauteni.
Sinä olet vereni,
keuhkoni,
silmäni,
hartiani,
käteni ja sydämeni.

Vapaus on sinun kaunis nimesi.
Ystävyys on ylpeä äitisi.
Oikeudenmukaisuus on veljesi.
Rauha on sisaresi.
Taistelu on isäsi,
tulevaisuus vastuusi.

Sinä olet hienointa, mitä tiedän.
Sinä olet kalleinta maailmassa.
Sinä olet kuin tähdet,
kuin tuulet,
kuin aallot,
kuin linnut,
kuin kukat maan päällä.

Juha Rämö, you are certainly talented in many languages! My English version differs by only a few words from yours, but thanks for your translation. In terms of which song lyrics should be listed, I think it would be good if both the original Silvio Rodriguez song and the Björn Afzelius version could be listed together and separate. Björn used the Rodriguez music and wrote his own words for it.

Ceil Herman - 2018/10/10 - 17:23

Dear Ceil and Juha, the original Silvio Rodriguez song is not an anti-war song as I understand it, that's why it is not listed in a separate page.

Lorenzo - 2018/10/10 - 17:57

Yes, that makes sense. Thanks for your reply, Lorenzo.

Ceil Herman - 2018/10/10 - 19:01

Welcome to join the ranks, Ceil Herman. This is not a place where you score points. Instead it's one where you deserve appreciation for contributing to a worthy cause - while remaining devoted to your passion which to me seems to be translating Swedish songs. Keep up the good work. Björn Afzelius is an excellent choice, but there's a lot more to this genre, Jan Hammarlund, Mikael Wiehe, Cornelis Vreeswijk, Roland von Malmborg ...

Juha Rämö - 2018/10/11 - 12:50

Thanks for your message Juha! My desire is to translate the legacy of Björn Afzelius into English, while keeping my Swedish in my memory. I last lived there in 1996.

I was happy to see the English translations which are already done on this website, but I still have many more to go. Since I am already 71 (the age Björn would have been if he lived), it feels like a life work for me!

I just added Björn’s ”Juanita,” so have fun translating it to Finnish!

Ceil Herman - 2018/10/11 - 17:18

Well, the future of Björn Afzelius songs looks bright to me thanks to people like you Ceil Herman and you Riccardo Venturi. And those songs most certainly deserve all the attention. Take for instance one of the latest contributions titled Född fri (Born Free). What a beautiful story and beautiful text, almost like a prolonged version of Txoria Txori as pointed out by Lorenzo Masetti.

Juha Rämö - 2018/10/11 - 21:36

You have been doing your part, Juha!

Ceil Herman - 2018/10/12 - 03:32

Your work is, quite simply, invaluable. And much more remains to be done (and improved, of course: for instance, I included the first songs by Björn Afzelius in this site in 2005, when it was quite difficult even to find Swedish songs lyrics in sites, pages etc.) And this holds not only för Björn Afzelius, of course: I think that the song heritage of all Nordic countries (Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, the Sami peoples) deserves to be better known around the world for its contents of humanity, richness, beauty and poetic quality, even in its oldest songs. I cannot but thank all those like you, Juha Rämö and Ceil Herman, who are contributing to this difficult task with competence, and love.

Riccardo Venturi - 2018/10/12 - 08:57

Thanks to you, Riccardo, for putting the first songs of Björn Afzelius on your website along with so many other wonderful songs. We Americans grew up with American/British folk and protest songs of the 60’s and 70’s but few international ones. Tack så mycket!
