Do prostego człowieka (English: To the Simple Man) is a poem by Julian Tuwim. Published for the first time in the November 7, 1929 edition of Robotnik daily, it immediately became popular due to its' strong pacifist and anti-war message. The poem mocks militarism, patriotic fervour and hysteria, and suggests that it is the powerful that reap the profits of wars waged by common people.

In recent years the poem was translated to English by Marcel Weyland. It also gained new popularity due to numerous rock bands performing it on their concerts. One of the best-known such interpretations is by a Polish rock group Akurat.

Gdy znów do murów klajstrem świeżym
przylepiać zaczną obwieszczenia,
gdy "do ludności", "do żołnierzy"
na alarm czarny druk uderzy
i byle drab, byle szczeniak
w odwieczne kłamstwo ich uwierzy,
że trzeba iść i z armat walić,
mordować, grabić, truć i palić;
gdy zaczną na tysięczną modłę
ojczyznę szarpać deklinacją
i łudzić kolorowym godłem,
i judzić "historyczną racją"
o piędzi, chwale i rubieży,
o ojcach, dziadach i sztandarach,
o bohaterach i ofiarach;
gdy wyjdzie biskup, pastor, rabin
pobłogosławić twój karabin,
bo mu sam Pan Bóg szepnął z nieba,
że za ojczyznę - bić się trzeba;
kiedy rozścierwi się, rozchami
wrzask liter z pierwszym stron dzienników,
a stado dziki bab kwiatami
obrzucać zacznie "żołnierzyków". -

- O, przyjacielu nieuczony,
mój bliźni z tej czy innej ziemi!
wiedz, że na trwogę biją dzwony
króle z panami brzuchatemi:
wiedz, że to buda, granda zwykła,
gdy ci wołają "Broń na ramię!",
że im gdzieś nafta z ziemi sikła
i obrodziła dolarami;
że coś im w bankach nie sztymuje,
że gdzieś zwęszyli kasy pełne
lub upatrzyły tłuste szuje
cło jakieś grubsze na bawełnę.
Rżnij karabinem w bruk ulicy!
Twoja jest krew, a ich jest nafta!
I od stolicy do stolicy
Zawołaj broniąc swej krwawicy:
"Bujać - to my, panowie szlachta!"

A un uomo semplice

https://musashop.files.wordpress.com/2...

Incolleranno i proclami,
Quando “al popolo”, “ai soldati”
La stampa l’allarme sonerà
Ed ogni stupido e ignaro
Alla vecchia “canzone” crederà,
Che bisogna andare e sparare,
Uccidere e saccheggiare;
Quando la patria in mille maniere
Cominceranno a declinare
Usando emblemi colorati,
Parlando di “storiche ragioni”,
Di terra, di gloria e di frontiere,
Di padri, avi e bandiere,
Di eroi e di sacrifici;
Quando vescovi, pastori e rabbini
Verranno a benedirti il fucile,
Perché Dio stesso ha sussurrato,
Che per la patria – bisogna lottare;
Quando urleranno le lettere
Sulle prime pagine dei giornali,
E donne focose in due ali
Lanceranno fiori “ai soldatini”.

– Oh, amico semplice e ignorante,
Compagno di questi e altri confini!
Sappi che suonano l’allarme
I re con i padroni panciuti;
Sappi che sono fandonie – tutte –
Quando ti gridano: “Arma in spalla!”
Per loro il petrolio è sgorgato
E molti dollari ha fruttato;

TO THE SIMPLE MAN

When every wall is hid by many
new posters freshly pasted up,
when ‘to the people’, ‘to the Army’,
in black print stare appeals alarming,
and any dolt, and any pup
will take for gospel each old lie
that one should go and shoot off guns
and murder, poison, rob, at once;
start drumming into all our noggins
the ‘Fatherland’; the mob incite,
bamboozle with bright-coloured slogans,
egg on with ‘Our historic right’,
‘every inch’, ‘glory’, ‘sacred borders’,
with ‘our forebears’, ‘pay the price’,
with ‘heroes’, ‘flag’ and ‘sacrifice’;
when bishop, pastor, rabbi come
to say a blessing on each gun,
for God has told them, that His will
is that for Country – you should kill;
when gutter tabloid screams and rages
in letters huge on its front pages,
and herds of females lose their voice
throwing bouquets at ‘our brave boys’,

– O, my untutored simple friend,
mate from this land, or other land!
Know that the bells for these alarums
kings strike, with girls with ample charms,
Know it’s all hogwash, lies perverted,
And when these call out: ‘Shoulder arms!’
That somewhere from the ground oil spurted,
With dollars soiling the bright colours;
That in their banks there’s something rotten,
They smelled some moneybags, it looks,
Or cooked some scheme, the oily crooks,
For higher import tax for cotton.
Drum on the pavement with your gun!
Ours the blood, the oil is theirs!
And through each capital and town
Scream out, to guard your cash blood-won:
‘Tell us another, noble sirs!’.

Deutsche Übersetzung von (German translation by) Agata Linden-Piechulska

Morden, Plündern, Vergiften und Abfackeln;
Wenn sie zum tausendsten Mal
Die Heimat zerreißend deklinieren
Und mit dem bunten Wappen ködern,
Und aufwiegeln: „historisches Recht“,
Über Spanne, Ruhm und Grenzland
Über Vettern, Urvettern und Standarten,
Über Helden und Opfer;
Dass man für das Vaterland sich schlagen muss;
Wenn er verkadavert und verroht,
Der Schrei der ersten Buchstaben der
Tageszeitungen,
Und eine Horde wilder Weiber – mit Blumen
Anfängt die Soldatchen zu bewerfen.

Ach, ungelernter Freund,
Mein Nächster aus diesem oder jenem Erdteil!
Wisse, dass es Zeit ist aufzuwachen (1)
Könige mit bauchigen Herren;
Rufe, deine Plackerei verteidigend:
„Flunkern – das können wir, ihr Herren!“
(1) Im Original ungefähr: Wisse, dass die Alarmglocken
läuten.

The original Polish text contains a typo (rather wide spread over the internet), which changes the meaning; from "...z panami brzuchatemi" to "...z pannami brzuchatemi". So the "fat-bellied lords" or "fat cats" become "girls with ample charms" (Polish "pan" = lord versus "panna" = maiden). I'm afraid it will mess up Marcel Weyland's translation but hopefully it can be corrected.

TO THE SIMPLE MAN

When again to walls with dripping glue,
They start to paste their signs,
When to dear people and dear soldiers too,
The ink blast-blackens through,
And every goon, and every foolish swine,
Takes this everlasting lie as true:
That one must go and by cannon rip asunder,
Murder, poison, burn and plunder;
When in the thousandth way they charm,
“Homeland, harm”—and by this sleight
of-hand delude with coat-of-arms,
And incite by reason of “historical right”,
The power, the glory, the frontiers,
Of our fathers, forefathers and their banners,
Of heroes and martyrs;
When the bishop, priest and rabbi,
All emerge to bless your rifle to the skies,
Because they themselves have heard God say,
For the homeland all must fight today;
When the cadaverous screech of vulgarized
front-page paper headlines rings,
And herds of wild women canonize
—with flowers—our brave little soldierlings:
“But, my dear unlearn'ed friend,
My brother from this or other worlds!
Know that they beat their drums with dread,
These kings with paunchy maiden-girls;
Know that it’s a sham, a common ruse,
When they command you: “Shoulder arms!”,
For somewhere deep their oil’s begun to ooze,
Yielding a harvest of dollars;
That banks aren’t quite to their liking—that
they’ve sniffed out cash in places easier to access,
Or else set-sights, these fattest cats,
On even fatter taxes.
Thresh the streets with bullets until you free the soil,
The blood is yours, the oil theirs!
And from capital to capital
call out, defending your blood, sweat and toil:
‘Fuck you—it’s us, you noble heirs!’”

Grazie e cordiali saluti. Paolo Statuti
