The song cycle begins with a song relating Seznec and Quémeneur’s journey, on Mary 25, 1923, on which Quémeneur disappeared without leaving any trace. A true reportage song written and performed by Tri Yann to a vivid and unconventional tune which does not presage tragedy…in fact, the true protagonist of the song is the old and wrecked Cadillac. A horrible tragedy arising from everyday’s matter.
Seznec au volant sue comme un damné ;

A vingt cinq ou trente à l’heure de moyenne ;

Il fait beau, l’auto mène son train-train ;

Ennuis, pannes et crevaisons à la pelle ;

Les deux associés avalent un morceau ;

Dans cet état-là, elle est invendable ;

Seznec al volante suda come un dannato ;
Quémeneur aspetta a Rennes e comincia a innervosirsi

a venticique o trenta all’ora di media ;

perde pezzi e bulloni dopo Rennes.

noie, guasti e forature a palate ;
brontolando di pompa in officina
la vecchia americana
procede a balzelloni da Alençon fino a Rennes.

i due soci vanno a mangiare un boccone ;

a venticinque o trenta all’ora di media.
Ruttando di pompa in officina
la vecchia americana
perde pezzi e bulloni fino a Rennes.

THE JOURNEY

The ignition is faulty, the engine’s pinkin’ hard
Seznec is drivin’ and sweatin’ with fatigue ;
Quémeneur’s waitin’ in Rennes and is gettin’ nervous,
An’ those bloody half-rotten tyres don’t give up bursting out !

Panting through villages and towns
the ol’ Cadillac’s goin’ on
doin’ 20 miles an hour or so ;
burping thru gas pumps an’ garages
the ol’ wreck from the USA
swallows down five or six cans before Rennes.

Next day they set up at dawn, it’s about five o’ clock,
the car keeps on goin’, the weather’s fine.
They make a stop in Ernée at breakfast time,
but the tyres burst out twice through the morning.

Coughin’ through villages and towns
the ol’ wreck’s goin’ on,
the tyres need bein’ replaced in Mayenne !
Steamin’ thru gas pumps an’ garages
the ol’ wreck from the USA
keeps on fallin’ to pieces past Rennes.

Quémeneur’s pissed off, the car still needs some repairs,
they stop in Dreux to replace a head joint !
The night falls before Houdan, those fuckin’ lights don’t work,
and squirrels, like idiots, are squeakin’ with amusement.

Passin’ on with oil spits
the Cadillac is gettin’ wild :
breakdown an’ punctures by heaps ;
grumblin’ thru gas pumps an’ garages
the ol’ wreck from the USA
jolts along thru Alençon and Rennes.

In Houdan, the ol’ wreck kicks the bucket at last,
the two friends stop for a quick snack ;
Quémeneur takes the train leaving Guillaume to see to it,
he hasn’t driven ten miles, when the engine breaks down again !

Panting like a water pump
the ol’ Cadillac stops
on Millemont slope, damn it !
He’s not thirty five miles
from Paris, maybe less,
Seznec falls asleep for one hour or two.

When he gets up, the car’s in a pitiable state,
nobody will ever buy that ol’ wreck.
Better drivin’ back to Morlaix to have the engine fix’d,
Paris garages are said to suck blood…

Drivin’ back home thru villages an’ towns
the ol’ Cadillac’s goin’ on
thru Mortagne and Alençon bound for Mayenne
burpin’ thru gas pumps and garages
the ol’ wreck from the USA
swallows down five or six cans before Rennes.

Drivin’ back home thru villages an’ towns
the ol’ wreck’s still goin’ on
doin’ twenty miles an hour or so,
burpin’ thru gas pumps an’ garages
the ol’ wreck from the USA
keeps on fallin’ to pieces past Rennes.
