This old Danish peace song, written in 1904 by the future winner of the Nobel Prize for Peace, Fredrik Bajer (who was awarded the Prize four years later, 1908) is part of a block of peace songs contributed by our Danish friend and contributor Holger Terp, whom we thank heartily. The songs in this “block” are hardly to be found outside Denmark and have been long left for approval due to technical reasons; finally, we start including (and translating) them beginning from this one.

Fredrik Bajer (April 21, 1837 – January 22, 1922) was a Danish writer, teacher, and pacifist politician who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1908.
The son of a clergyman, Bajer served as an officer in the Danish army, fighting in the 1864 war against Prussia and Austria where he was promoted to the rank of first lieutenant. He was discharged in 1865, and moved to Copenhagen where he became a teacher, translator and writer.
He entered the Danish Parliament in 1872 as a member of Folketinget and held a seat there for the following 23 years. As a member of parliament, he worked for the use of international arbitration to solve conflicts among nations, and it is due to Bajer's efforts that foreign relations became part of the work of the Danish Parliament and that Denmark participated in the Inter-Parliamentary Union from the beginning and earned a distinguished position among its members.
He supported many peace organizations, both inside Denmark and Europe-wide, and helped guide the passage of a bill to reach arbitration agreements with Sweden and Norway. [CCG/AWS Staff]

NOTE. The song lyrics are first shown in the official spelling used in Denmark at composition time; a transcription into the current spelling follows.
Fredens Daad skal Frugter bære
uden Plet af Blod.
Frugter, som vort Folk skal være
Næring sund og god.
Folkehad er giftig Føde,
Folk og Land det lægger øde,
Brodersind til alle Sider
Folk og Land udvider.

Fremad under Fredens Fane!
Frem til Kamp mod Krig!
Ej for Guld og Land at rane
eller plyndre Lig.
Men for trindt at skabe Lykke,
som gør Nordens Grænser trygge.
Brodersind til alle Sider
Folk og Land udvider.

“Slyng din Arm om Millioner,
elsk den hele Jord!”
Og trods Kroner og Kanoner
bli'r din Sejr da stor;
thi kun varig Sejr vinder
den, som Hjærtet til sig binder,
Brodersind til alle Sider
Folk og Land udvider.

Fylk om Fanen Skarer tætte,
alle, som vil Fred!
Fredens Maal det er at sætte
Ret i Magtens Sted.
Krigen skiller, Freden samler,
indtil Grænsepæle ramler.
Brodersind til alle Sider
Land og Folk udvider

Il testo nella grafia attuale
Lyrics transcribed into current spelling

[RV]

The most visible differences are the elimination of the "German-style" Großschreibung (i.e., all nouns had to be written with capital initial) and the introduction of the "all-Scandinavian" grapheme å instead of aa. Bajer's original lyrics already show the grapheme ø, but several Danes held to the Swedish-style ö until the 1948 spelling reform. [RV]

Versione italiana di Riccardo Venturi
26 dicembre 2009
L'AZIONE PACIFISTA DARA' FRUTTI

L'azione pacifista darà frutti
senza macchiare di sangue.
Frutti, che per il nostro popolo
saranno sano e buon nutrimento.

basta spoliare i cadaveri.

E malgrado corone e cannoni,
la tua vittoria sarà enorme;
