Originariamente avevamo riportato questi autori:

fuera tavo, fuera tavo, aleluya.

Las metrallas en la mano
un herido muy cercano
la masacre no termina
una noche de granadas
muchas vidas destrozadas.

Aleluya.

Cinco padres que reclaman
les entregan las cenizas
la sonrisa de un sargento
la mentira para el pueblo
una madre que pregunta
asesinos que se juntan.

Aleluya.

Hay silencio más no olvido
un hijito se ha perdido
corre sangre por el suelo
es festín de granadero
estudiantes maltratados
los derechos pisoteados.

Aleluya.

Decisión de mente obtusa
un disparo de basooka
unos lobos en la noche
doce voces que no se oyen
una puerta derrumbada
buen madero para tumba.

Aleluya.

Un soldado se adelanta
y atraviesa una garganta
no hay paz para los muertos
ni ataúd para sus cuerpos
la maldad de un presidente
el dolor de aquella gente.

Aleluya.

Multitudes que reclaman
policías que los atacan
lambiscones temblorosos
seis chacales temerosos
una anciana que protesta
se la lleva la secreta.

Aleluya.

Un tirano y una bota
una ley que no funciona
los periódicos vendidos
locutores corrompidos
podredumbre en las planas
polvo y lodo en las pantallas.

Aleluya.

Una cárcel sin salida
un obrero sin comida
la miseria exasperante
la dobléz del gobernante
opulencia y disctadura
nuestro pueblo, ¡nunca, nunca!

Aleluya.

Estas son las cosas que me hacen
repudiar al gobierno loco del
fascista Días Ordáz.
Aleluya, Aleluya, Aleluya.

Versione cantata da Oscar Chávez

Letras: PARODIA ANONIMA

muchas vidas destrozadas,
aleluya.

gritos mudos que suplican,
una tierra que palpita,
los recuerdos mutilados,
los deseos apagados,
una niña que pregunta,
unos cuerpos que se anudad,
aleluya.

quince paders que suplican
les entreguen las cenizas,
la burla de un regimiento,
la sonrisa del sargenteo,
unas madres que se juntan,
asesinos que preguntan,
aleluya.

unos pasos sin destino
por cuarenta mil caminos,
un espanto disonante,
el infierno en un instante
rojas flores sin su tumba,
siempre nunca, nunca, nunca,
aleluya.

estas son las cosas
que me hacen repudiar
al gobierno loco
del fascista diaz ordaz.
muera tavo, muera tavo,
aleluya.

la razon de la locura,
una luz de luna obscura,
hay disparos en la noche,
unas voces que se rompen,
una llama que se apaga,
una vida que se acaba,
aleluya.

una madre que se espanta,
tengo seca la garganta,
el color de tiempo muerto,
un mañana siempre incierto,
hay sudor en nuestra mente,
el dolor de tanta gente,
aleluya.

un reloj sin manecillas,
mucha gente de rodillas,
unas luces de bengala,
el fragor de la metralla,
una lluvia sobre el alma
un incendio en las entrañas,
aleluya.

hay silencio, mas no olvido,
un hijo que se ha perdido,
corre sangre por el suelo,
es fiesta de granaderos,
estudiantes maltratados,
los derechos pisoteados,
aleluya.

estas son las cosas
que me hacen repudiar
al gobierno loco
del fascista diaz ordaz.
muera tavo, muera tavo,
aleluya.

American version, sung by Ed Ames, popular in 1968: "Who Will Answer (Aleluya No. 1)", lyrics by Sheila Davis. Audio available at youtube

as sung by Ed Ames
Lyrics, Sheila Davis; music: Luis Eduardo Aute
Who Will Answer?

From the canyons of the mind,
We wander on and stumble blindly
Through the often-tangled maze
Of starless nights and sunless days,
While casting for some kind of clue
Or road to lead us to the truth,
But who will answer?

Side by side two people stand,
Together vowing, hand-in-hand
That love's imbedded in their hearts,
But soon an empty feeling starts
To overwhelm their hollow lives,
And when we seek the hows and whys,
Who will answer?

High upon a lonely ledge,
a figure teeters near the edge,
And jeering crowds collect below
To egg him on with, "Go, man, go!"
And who will ask what led him
To his private day of doom,
And who will answer?

On a strange and distant hill,
A young man's lying very still.
His arms will never hold his child,
Because a bullet running wild
Has cut him down. And now we cry,
"Dear God, Oh, why, oh, why?"
And who will answer?

(Full melody the rest of the song)

If the soul is darkened by a fear it cannot name,
If the mind is baffled when the rules don't fit the game,
Who will answer? Who will answer? Who will answer?

In the rooms of dark and shades,
The scent of sandalwood pervades.
The colored thoughts in muddled heads
Reclining in rumpled beds
Of unmade dreams that can't come true,
And when we ask what we should do,
Who? Who will answer?

'Neath the spreading mushroom tree,
The world revolves in apathy
As overhead, a row of specks
Roars on, drowned out by discotheques,
And if a secret button's pressed
Because one man has been outguessed,
Who will answer?

Is our hope in walnut shells
Worn 'round the neck with temple bells,
Or deep within some cloistered walls
Where hooded figures pray in halls?
Or crumbled books on dusty shelves,
Or in our stars, or in ourselves,
Who will answer?

If the soul is darkened
By a fear it cannot name,
If the mind is baffled
When the rules don't fit the game,
Who will answer? Who will answer? Who will answer?
Alleluiah! Alleluiah! Alleluiah!

“Aleluya No. 1” by Luis Eduardo Autes did not deal with the Mexican Tlatelolco massacre of October 1968, because it was written in 1967, as was the American version, sung by Ed Ames, “Who Will Answer (Aleluya No. 1)”.

According to http://www.gramble.com/music/60sbydate... Ames’ record appeared on the top 40 chart on December 30, 1967 (almost a year before the shooting) and was on the list for 4 weeks, reaching #19. Meanwhile, the Spanish version had already been a number one hit in Spain in 1967.

Although the English “Who Will Answer” has some social-justice and antiwar flavor, the Spanish original contains no such antiwar theme; it is merely abstract poetry like “Stairway to Heaven” or “MacArthur Park”, or Leonard Cohen.

That Spanish original, “Aleluya No. 1”, sung by Massiel, is on YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHcxCym0KjM

Compare Aute himself performing “Aleluya Numero 1” on YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9jAlJHUgsk

(Personally, I think the Ames version is a lot better than those two, not just because of its antiwar tenor. His is more energetic and nuanced, and has a more imaginative arrangement and orchestration. In addition, Ames does a superior job with the melody, by using changes of rhythm and key in its long stretches of one-note chanting. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQ5MxSmOdOQ )

Sheila Davis, lyricist for the English version, “Who Will Answer (Aleluya No. 1)”, [already posted above] is author of some highly regarded books on songwriting.

Below I am posting the non-antiwar Spanish original by Aute, as sung by Massiel.

After that I am posting a non-poetic English version of that non-antiwar original, as rendered by http://www.freetranslation.com/ , then corrected by myself and Mary Jo Graça.

Aleluya No. 1
by Luis Eduardo Aute; as sung by Massiel

Por estas cosas y por vivir
Aleluya, aleluya, aaaa....

Una lágrima en la mano
un suspiro muy cercano
una historia que termina
una piel que no respira
una nube desgarrada
una sangre derramada
aleluya;

Quince gritos que suplican
una tierra que palpita
la sonrisa de un recuerdo
la mentira de un te quiero
una niña que pregunta
unos cuerpos que se juntan
aleluya;

Mil silencios de un olvido
un amor que se ha perdido
tres guirnaldas en el pelo
el aliento de unos besos
el perdón de los pecados
unos pies que están clavados
aleluya;

La razón de la locura
una luz de luna obscura
unos ojos en la noche
una voz que no se oye
una llama que se apaga
una vida que se acaba
aleluya.

Estas son las cosas
que me hacen olvidar
este mundo absurdo
que no sabe a donde va

Aleluya, aleluya, aaaa....

Una madre que amamanta
tengo seca la garganta
el color de un tiempo abierto
un mañana siempre incierto
el sudor en una frente
el dolor de una gente
aleluya;

Una llaga que se cierra
una herida que se encierra
unos labios temblorosos
unos brazos calurosos
dos palabras en la arena
una ola se las lleva
aleluya;

Un reloj con treinta horas
el cartel de no funciona
una piedra en el vacío
otra piedra en el sentido
una lluvia en el alma
un incendio en las entrañas
aleluya;

Unos pasos sin destino
por cuarenta mil caminos
un acorde disonante
nueve infiernos y el Dante
unas flores en mi tumba
siempre, nunca, nunca, nunca
aleluya.

Estas son las cosas
que me hacen olvidar
este mundo absurdo
que no sabe a donde va

Aleluya, aleluya, aaaa....
Aleluya, aleluya, aaaa....
Aleluya, aleluya, aaaa....

Aleluya No. 1
by Luis Eduardo Aute; as sung by Massiel

For these things and for living
Alleluia, alleluia, aaaa....

A tear in the hand
a very nearby sigh
a story that finishes
a skin that does not breathe
a cloud torn
a blood spilled
alleluia;

Fifteen shouts that beseech
a land that palpitates
the smile of a memory
the lie of an I want you
a girl that asks
some bodies that join together
alleluia;

Thousand silences of what’s forgotten
a love that has been lost
three wreaths in the hair
the encouragement of some kisses
the pardon of the sins
some feet that are nailed
alleluia;

The reason of the insanity
a light of obscured moon
some eyes in the night
a voice that is not heard
a flame that has gone out
a life that finishes
alleluia;

These are the things
that cause me to forget
this absurd world
that does not know where it’s going

Alleluia, alleluia, aaaa....

A mother that suckles
my throat is dry
the color of clear weather
an always uncertain tomorrow
the sweat on a forehead
the pain of a people
alleluia;

A open wound that closes
an injury that is enclosed
some trembling lips
some warm arms
two words in the sand
a wave which takes them
alleluia;

A clock with thirty hours
an out-of-order sign
a stone in the void
another stone in the feeling
a rain in the soul
a fire in the bowels
alleluia;

Some steps without destination
on forty thousand roads
a dissonant accord
nine hells and Dante
some flowers on my tomb
always, never, never, never
alleluia;

These are the things
that cause me to forget
this absurd world
that does not know where it’s going

Alleluia, alleluia, aaaa....
Alleluia, alleluia, aaaa....
Alleluia, alleluia, aaaa....
