[Anni '60]

Mommy, why was the darkie born?
Mommy, why was the darkie born?
Somebody had to pick the cotton,
Somebody had to pull the corn
Somebody had to build a great nation.
That’s why the darkie was born
That’s why the darkie was born.

Mommy, why was the darkie born?
Mommy, why was the darkie born?
Somebody had to cry at midnight,
Somebody had to weep and moan,
Somebody had to love everybody
That’s why the darkie was born
That’s why the darkie was born.

Mommy, why was the darkie born?
Mommy, why was the darkie born?
Somebody had to beat the drums
Somebody had to blow the horn
Somebody had to sing the blues
That’s why the darkie was born
That’s why the darkie was born.

Mommy, why was the darkie born?
Mommy, why was the darkie born?
Somebody had to go to jail
Somebody had to walk a picket line
Somebody had to fight for freedom
That’s why the darkie was born
That’s why the darkie was born.
