Járkálj csak, halálraítélt!
bokrokba szél és macska bútt,
a sötét fák sora eldől
előtted: a rémülettől
fehér és púpos lett az út.

Zsugorodj őszi levél hát!
zsugorodj, rettentő világ!
az égről hideg sziszeg le
és rozsdás, merev füvekre
ejtik árnyuk a vadlibák.

Ó, költő, tisztán élj te most,
mint a széljárta havasok
lakói és oly bűntelen,
mint jámbor, régi képeken
pöttömnyi gyermek Jézusok.

S oly keményen is, mint a sok
sebtől vérző, nagy farkasok.

CAMMINA PURE, CONDANNATO A MORTE !

Cammina pure, condannato a morte!
nei cespugli si nascondono vento e gatto,
la fila degli alberi scuri ti crolla
addosso: dallo spavento
la strada diventa gobba e bianca.

Su, rattrappisciti, foglia autunnale!
Rattrappisciti, orrido mondo!
dal cielo fiata il freddo
e le ombre delle oche selvatiche
cadono su fili d’erba tesi e arrugginiti.

Oh, poeta, adesso vivi immacolato
come gli abitanti dei nevai percorsi dal vento
senza peccato,
come i devoti, minuscoli
bambin Gesù nei vecchi quadri.

Duramente, come i grandi lupi,
da tante ferite sanguinanti.

JUST WALK ON, CONDEMNED TO DIE!

Just walk on, condemned to die!
in woods where winds and catscreams wail,
sentence in darkened lines
shall fall upon the pines;
hunchbacked with fear the road turns pale.

Just shrivel up, you autumn leaves!
shrivel, most hideous of worlds!
cold hisses from the sky;
on grasses rusted dry
the shadow of the wild geese falls.

O poet, live as clean as those
hill-dwellers in their windblown snows,
O live as free of sin
as baby Jesus in
an ikon where the candle glows,

as hard as the great wolf who goes
wounded and bleeding through the snows
