Viideltä saunaan ja kuudelta putkaan
Se on sellainen työmiehen lauantai
Viideltä saunaan ja kuudelta putkaan
Se on sellainen työmiehen lauantai

Sunnuntai-aamuna kotiin kun hän saapuu
Pari litraa vettä heti kurkkuhun kaatuu
Vaimonsa edessä hän tekojansa katuu
Kunnes koittaa arkinen maanantai

Seitsemältä töihin ja neljältä kotiin
Se on sellainen työmiehen maanantai
Seitsemältä töihin ja neljältä kotiin
Se on sellainen työmiehen maanantai

Joka päivä seitsemältä töihin hän menee
Hikipäässä perheellensä elatuksen hakee
Satoi taikka paistoi, töissä hänet näkee
Kunnes koittaa viimein se lauantai

Viideltä saunaan ja kuudelta putkaan
Se on sellainen työmiehen lauantai
Viideltä saunaan ja kuudelta putkaan
Se on sellainen työmiehen lauantai

Vesi on hyvää ja aspiriini maistuu
Höyryt kun vähitellen päästä jo haihtuu
Viikon sisään lompakkokin laihaksi vaihtuu
Kunnes koittaa viimein se lauantai

Viideltä saunaan ja kuudelta putkaan
Se on sellainen työmiehen lauantai
Viideltä saunaan ja kuudelta putkaan
Se on sellainen työmiehen lauantai

A WORKMAN'S SATURDAY

At five in the sauna, at six in the drunk tank,
Such is a workman's Saturday,
At five in the sauna, at six in the drunk tank,
Such is a workman's Saturday

Sunday morning, when he comes back home
He swallows at once two liters of water
Then he repents in front of his wife
Until Monday comes as usual

At seven to work, at four back home
Such is a workman's Monday
At seven to work, at four back home
Such is a workman's Monday

At seven, he goes every day to work
Supporting his family with his sweat,
Rain or shine, you see him at work
Until Saturday finally comes

At five in the sauna, at six in the drunk tank,
Such is a workman's Saturday,
At five in the sauna, at six in the drunk tank,
Such is a workman's Saturday

Water is good and aspirine is tasty
When vapors gradually evaporate from his head
Within a week, his money too will evaporate from his wallet
Until Saturday finally comes

At five in the sauna, at six in the drunk tank,
Such is a workman's Saturday,
At five in the sauna, at six in the drunk tank,
Such is a workman's Saturday

The lyrics of this song are not by Irwin Goodman but by Emil von Retee, a pseudonym of Vexi Salmi, one of the most prolific Finnish lyricists of all times. Goodman and Salmi were like hand and glove. Befriended at the age of three and four, they grew up together in the same neighborhood and their friendship lasted until Goodman's death in 1991. Salmi wrote the lyrics to most of Goodman's compositions and acted as his manager.

Goodman's 1966 tango titled Marcello Magaroni has an interesting bearing on Italy. It's a benevolent parody of Umberto Marcato, an Italian singer from Padova, who made a remarkable career in Finland in the 1960's by covering Finnish tangos and deserving the unconditional love of Finnish tango fans of which there were and still are quite a lot. Most of his covers were in Italian, such as (Restera) (original Finnish title Liljankukka, Flower of a Lily), but he also sang a few in inimitable broken Finnish, and doing so, once again touched the hearts of many Finnish tango lovers. His songs recorded in Finnish include titles such as Marja-Leena and Miksi puhelin ei soi, in English »Why Isn't the Phone Ringing«.
