Thuch Savanj

As a child I was happy,
never really worrying about anything,
My parents and grand parents
took good care of me day and night.
I didn't even know how to dress myself,
even when I was nine years old.
But with just a blink of an eye,
war took over and destroyed everything.
My aunt, who took care of me,
died and I was wounded.
This was a war of bombs, and this was my fate.
Khmer Rouge starved and killed us.
They forced me to work and live with other children
I did not know, and there was no food.
They forced us into hard labor
and I was separated from my mother.
Then they killed my father.
I was scared and angry.
They starved my grandfather to death.
Only my old grandmother and me survived.
My heart and my body were in such pain,
it was like a whole mountain had fallen on me.
I was in shock and no longer able to cry.
Boys and girls, old and young, everybody suffered.
There was no peace, nor freedom.
Khmer Rouge inflicted this pain every day and night.
I make this story short for you,
but if there is more time
and if there is a next time,
I will tell it all to the end.
There is so much more.
