Soldier's Lament

Mike McLaren
Language: English

Go tell the General it ain’t workin’;
go tell the Sergeant that we’re doomed;
go tell the Corporal that we’re leavin’...
because this nasty business
ain’t gonna get any better anytime soon.

The sky keeps fallin’ like a bombshell.
Bullets keep whizzin’ by our heads.
Mortars keep droppin’ by our bedsides;
We got to get out of this place
before all of us wind up dead.

Chorus
I can hear my mama callin’ me;
she don’t want a flag to keep in my memory;
my girl back home could really use some lovin’,
and not from some rich kid who bought his freedom.

The folks in this country really don’t like us;
we’ve made ‘em ‘bout as mad as they can be,
and as if things just couldn’t get any bleaker,
we stirred the hornet’s nest
and made us a lot more enemies.
My buddy in the next hole has the willies;
the fella in the next trench has the shakes,
ain’t nothin’ in the whole world gonna save ‘em,
because this time spent in hell
ain’t nothin’ but a life-long mistake.

So, go tell the General it ain’t workin’;
go tell the Sergeant that we’re doomed;
go tell the Corporal that we’re leavin’...
... ‘cause this nasty business
ain’t gonna get any better anytime soon
