Song for Chile

David Rovics
Language: English

The people had hope after the election
When we came to power
For the hungry, the landless, exploited
This was the hour
The air was electric for one thousand days
It was our turn to make right
After hundreds of years being under the thumb
It was an unbelievable sight

To see workers and peasants, women and men
Beneath these chandeliers
To see the joy and the presence of life
The conclusion of so many tears
This was the moment we'd worked for so long
Finally, this was our land
If you didn't live here, as so many have said
You just wouldn't understand

We brought milk to the babies, food to their parents
Real doctors to those with disease
The people knew they could stand and speak up for themselves
And no longer live on their knees
And to ITT, Anaconda and all of the rest
We said this place is not yours
You've made enough money from our blood and our copper
Now go away from these shores

But after so long as a colony of our master, El Norte
It all came as little surprise
That the CIA thugs with their millions of dollars
And all the gold dust in their eyes
Would do all they could to set one on another
And nothing was beneath their will
From buying up newspapers, blowing up factories
And training death squads to torture and kill

Our supporters were murdered with guns from the US
It was terror wherever you'd look
And these goose-stepping fascists, Patria y Libertad
With training they happily took
From our masters up North and their School of Assassins
Who brainwashed the minds of good men
Had we known all their tricks perhaps we could have stopped them
If only we could start over again

But when we came to power, Popular Unity
We kept the promise we'd sworn
To honor democracy and to rule by the law
And to make sure a new day would be born
And the people stood with us in the streets and the ballots
Right up to the bitter end
And I speak to you now here in La Moneda
As your comrade and friend

The tanks they're approaching, the traitorous generals
With all the will that they've found
From rich corporations and politicians from Washington
Are coming for this sacred ground
The terrorists called first, said I could go with my life
But with this machine gun in hand
As your loyal President, servant of Chile
Here I will make my last stand

My name is Salvador, Salvador Allende
And this is my final speech
I stood for the people, the people of Chile
When everything seemed within reach
And it will be again, history will tell
And the world will remember
1973, when I lost my life
On the eleventh of September
