Cardinal Law

The altar was resplendent
with a seven-foot solid gold cross,
embossed with jade and onyx,
& draped with robes of red velvet & white silk.
The altar boy's dependent
on the people he thinks he can trust.
And, for sure, you can trust your priest
without question or guilt.

Steven met Father Damion
on the first day of catechism class,
a kindly father figure
for a little boy who'd lost his dad.
It wasn't long 'til the freckled kid's
helping out with the giving of the Mass.
There were baseball games, little red toy trains
& fun times to be had.

Steven thought Father Damion
was the best that could ever, ever be.
He'd help him with his homework.
He would help him out through times of change.
It wasn't long 'til the young priest's hand
came to rest on his little student's knee.
When it stayed too long, was this something wrong?
It seemed just a bit too strange.

There ought to be a CARDINAL LAW.
There ought to be a CARDINAL sin
that says a priest can't do at all
what they have done since way back when.
There ought to be a CARDINAL LAW.
So, now you tell me that there is.
Should we be any more appalled
the Church has been denying this?

Steven found Father Damion
had a dark side behind his heavy robes.
The boy was feeling guilty.
He was angry, bitter & confused.
He wouldn't play with the other kids
& for sure Mom could never, ever know.
When he stayed too long, was this something wrong?
He felt like he had been used.

There's a little boy inside
that is hurt & scared & lonely.
There's a little boy inside that feels betrayed.
There are a lot of little boys
finding out it's not them only.
& now, isn't it about time somebody paid?

Do we ever hear about nuns
taking little girls under their habits?
Have there ever been studies done
why the priests seem to like little boys?
Father, forgive them. Do they know not what they do?
