Boris Yeltsin

Peter Hicks
Language: English

Some sing about Tsar Nicholas, or Catherine the Great,
Now Russia has a brighter star, to laud and celebrate,
His name it is Tsar Boris, a people's hero he,
With selflessness and sacrifice, he set a nation free.

Oh Boris, Boris Yeltsin,
The people's hero, you,
We don't mind if we can't find work,
And we don't need fuel or food.
Of course we don't mind starving
If it's for a worthy cause,
As you strut upon the world's stage,
Claiming all Russia as yours.

He's changed the Soviet Union to a commonwealth of states,
Where all nations are equal if they learn to know their place.
He's pulled a breathless master-stroke, some say his finest yet -
"I'll take the gold and currency - you others, share the debts."

Oh Boris, Boris Yeltsin ...

He's an economic genius, and his leadership is strong,
Eight hours each day in line for food, he could see that must be wrong.
"If we raise prices three hundred fold, the queues will disappear,
And if a million old folk starve and freeze, they'll be shorter still next year."

Oh Boris, Boris Yeltsin ...

Now Boris is a man of peace, there's nothing he'd rather see,
Than a world in which there is no war, in a world that's nuclear free.
But there's all those Soviet missiles still, and submarines so fine -
"No problem," says our Boris, "I'll take them all - they're mine!"

Oh Boris, Boris Yeltsin ...

Seems strange, not all that long ago, this loyal party man,
He rose to power upon the Kremlin's economic plans;
Till one day Boris thought he saw which way the wind it blew,
And before you could say "Lenin!", Comrade Yeltsin changed his tune.

Oh Boris, Boris Yeltsin ...

So now the people's Boris he promotes democracy,
"You're free to vote for who you want - as long as you want me,
"But if you don't do as I say then I'll rule by decree,
"For only my dictatorship can keep the people free."

Oh Boris, Boris Yeltsin,
The people's hero, you,
We don't mind if we can't find work,
And we don't need fuel or food.
Of course we don't mind starving
If it's for a worthy cause,
As you strut upon the world's stage,
Claiming all Russia as yours.
