Another War Out There

Peter Hicks
Language: English

You hide behind your desk
Using words like coward and traitor,
Because I will not take up arms
And go off to fight your war;
How then should I describe
Leaders who send their own people
Far away to kill and die,
Never saying what it's for?

You talk of loyalty
And of standing by our country,
But your rhetoric and speeches
Don't say anything to me;
As I look across the ocean
At the sea of human faces,
My eyes see fellow workers,
Not a ruthless enemy.

I have no cause to hate
The men I would be killing,
Nor the children nor the women
Whose homes you'd have me bomb;
For the people of that land,
They are my sisters and my brothers,
And our fight is not with people
Who have never done us wrong.

Behind your patriotic rage
I can see the strings a-pulling
Of the mighty and the powerful,
Playing god with humankind;
No, I will not give my life,
And I will not take another's
In pursuit of wealth and riches
In a war that has no right.

I have no cause to hate....

There's another war out there,
It's the one we should be fighting,
It's the war against poverty,
Starvation and disease;
For your missiles, tanks and guns,
They aren't only bought with dollars,
But by the millions daily dying
Until this senselessness has ceased.

I have no cause to hate
The men who you are killing,
Nor the children nor the women
Whose homes each day you bomb;
For the people of that land,
They are my sisters and my brothers,
And our fight is not with people
Who have never done us wrong.
