A People's History

David Muñoz
Language: English

George Washington was a drug dealer
Andrew Jackson, an Indian killer
Abraham Lincoln never freed the slaves
Ronald Reagan helped the rich every one of his days.

To really understand what I'm doing and what I'm trying to say,
just look at what history has taught us: that a man will fight
every day of his life to have freedom. I thought I was free until
two things happened to me, one was entering the workforce as a
teacher and the other was a book called "A People's History of
the United States" by Howard Zinn and that's when everything
became clearer.

They started killing us from off the boat, looking for gold
Chopping off our hands if we didn't do what they told
Sold every last one at the point of a gun
Claiming, naming every land underneath the sun
The Nina, the Pinta, the Sants Maria
The Mayflower Compact will never free ya
See, all these Pilgrims and Williams
They start exploiting by the millions
Created a whole country full of greedy villains
The American Revolution was a bust, In God We Trust
Thinkin' Hamilton and Washington were really fighting for us
It's just the power elite's towering feat, control the masses by controlling every seat
Cause we're sheep, being led to the slaughter
Why even bother dumping tea in the harbor
So they can get themselves some founding father?
About ready for war, the government's against the poor
Knockin' on the white house door with anything but metaphor

A People's History of the United States
A People's Story of how they battle hate
A People's Trouble with how they barely see
A People's Struggle with how they're hardly free

They got us in chains, calling us names
The blood in my veins just another part of monopoly games
Everything is always as it was before
Now they want me to go fight and die in some Civil War
And after Reconstruction, we can reconstruct
Putting back together the things that the government messed up
Working for a living wage, union reps get on the stage
Make way for the man that used to be a slave
Now I'm headed West, I'd get the land that's best
But it belongs to that dude with the star on his chest
I guess he took it from the Indians cause he can
Now he's running around worried about his Uncle Sam
And as for Uncle Tom, that want to sing that song
He looks around at all his people and they all are gone
They started working on the railroads, in the fields
Now he travels up and down all these cities on hills

George Washington was a drug dealer
Andrew Jackson, an Indian killer
Abraham Lincoln never freed the slaves
Ronald Reagan helped the rich every one of his days

Ever since they shot Abe Lincoln, wanna stop my drinkin'
But this prohibition got me thinkin', politicians winkin'
Now I'm in a Great Depression, and I'm stressin'
Not to mention my stomach's been growling through this congressional session
Think it's time we get our worker's rights, picket fights
Cause for real my job right now it got me working nights
And now my girl is working too, just to make it through
What we gonna do it they make me fight in World War II?
The government will take take and never give
At least those other countries have never killed where I've lived
Now we're going to war, but Vietnam, now it's on
All the world scared cause we threw that first A-bomb
Now I'm making what I made 50 years ago
Way the story go, ain't no G.I. Joe, but a hero
Taking all this love, all this hate, clear the slate
No other way to leave but a dis-united state

A People's History of the United States
A People's Story of how they battle hate
A People's Trouble with how they barely see
A People Struggle with how they're hardly free
