In the proud lineage of Welsh immigrants who came to America in the late 1700s, Richard was born in Houston, Texas. He joined the U.S. Navy, where he began the study of Japanese karate, earning a black belt, continuing throughout the years earning his black belt in Judo, and on to become a grandmaster in Taekwondo, teaching martial arts to literally thousands.
He became a builder, a master electrician, an acoustic guitar picker and singer, an artist, a master sign painter, earning degrees in binary logic (computer language), commercial art, electrical design and application, water technology, and drafting.
Richard began his poetry writing career at age nine, when his aunt taught him the English [Shakespearean] Sonnet. His love for poetry grew over the years as he studied and taught the art of poetry, until becoming a published, widely recognized master poet and Poet Laureate Emeritus to the International Poetry Writer's Workshop.
