VÖGELEIN
Es saß ein klein wild Vögelein
auf einem grünen Ästchen.
Es sang die ganze Winternacht
mit heller, klarer Stimme.
"Oh, sing mir mehr! Oh, sing mir mehr,
du kleines wildes Vögelein,
so will ich deine Flügel kleiden

Author's comments:
Björn Afzelius wrote the following notes about "Under Sions kalla stjärna" in his 95 Sånger (95 Songs) book:
"The song tells what happened. The year was 1988, and Intifada, the Palestinian rebellion against the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip beginning in 1987, was only a few months old. When I met the newly elected Palestinian president, Yasser Arafat, eight years later in Stockholm, he thanked me personally for my input in Athens at that time. Few statesmen have a better memory for details than Arafat."

The following translation is reproduced from Lyricstranslate, made by “Seppo Ilmarinen”. Though his Kalevala nickname, the translator declares English to be his native language. Nevertheless, I think he has misunderstood a certain number of points in the Danish lyrics (especially tenses), and his “native English” seems to be a bit lame here and there. I confess I don't like that much criticizing other people's translations, but I couldn't help making some corrections in the English. I hope of course not to have added new errors! Anyway, a new English translation should be advisable. [RV]

En kungens man
This powerful tragic song, with lyrics and music by Björn Afzelius, is still a poignant social commentary. Titled "Kungens man" (King's man), it was also performed by Lisa Ekdahl, as well as Monica Tornell and Falconer (En kungens man).
Björn Afzelius wrote the following notes
Björn Afzelius wrote the following notes
I read in the old West Goth law about how you were previously regarded differently, depending on the class you belonged to. The laws have changed since then, but not the way in which they are practiced.

Elegi för Salvador Allende
On the back of the album cover, there is a photo, and Björn Afzelius wrote the following notes:
"Salvador Allende 1909-1973
"Salvador Allende 1909-1973
Voted to President in Chile in 1970 after a completely democratic election. In a military coup on the 11th of September, the presidential palace was taken and Allende was forced to leave. He refused and met instead the armed military to save democracy. Shortly after the photo was taken, the presidential palace was stormed. Salvador Allende was dead."

Björn Afzelius wrote the following notes in his 95 Sånger (95 Songs) book:
"Everything is relative here in the world. It can be good to remember before one whines next time. Only after I have seen the misery in Managua I began to be grateful that I was born in Sweden." [Ceil Herman]

Som en duva
Mikael Wiehe wrote the music and lyrics of this beautiful song. His notes about it say in English:
"The text was written as a tribute to the political refugees who came here from Latin America and became our friends. It feels harder to sing today. The text could be interpreted that one wishes refugees out of our country. When it was written, it was no problem. All the Latin Americans we knew wanted to return as quickly as possible to continue their fight against the USA supported military dictators.
Björn often sang the song and made it famous in Norway" (Comments from Songs in the time, 2001)

Hiroshima
The comments of Björn Afzelius about his song are especially significant to me. I lived in Stockholm for a year's sabbatical, and know the huge area of Sergels Torg, a square located in the center of town. Though I was not there for the anniversary, to think of it filled with demonstrators while this beautiful and haunting song played is a powerful vision.
Two times the bird of death lifted in the night.

Title track del nuovo album dei Metric
Another big word that has recently become pretty important to you is the word “doubt”. I mean, you’ve dedicated an entire album to it: your new record “Art Of Doubt”. Is doubting a human property that is more positive or more negative?
More positive. I would say it’s the origin of science and the arts and poetry and everything we know—because we’ve questioned: What’s in the sky? What is the world made of? Doubt and questioning are the heart. That’s where all the good stuff happens.

You know, views are shifting all around the world and politicians are exploiting fear. So, in fact, it’s the opposite of doubt. It’s that they’re like exploiting a sort of arrogance or a sense of entitlement in people as... (continua)

Sample from the final speech from "The Great Dictator"

Mare Nostrum (Don't Leave Shore)
2016
Written by Allan J Begg, performed by Elvers
Written whilst on holiday in Cyprus in spring 2015 just after the UK announced that they were withdrawing naval support for an Italian-led search and rescue operation in the Mediterranean called Mare Nostrum ("Our Sea'). The reasoning was that the likelihood of rescue was deemed a "pull-factor" for refugees and migrants to set sail. The inference being that if we let enough drown they'll soon get the message and decide to stay on shore. I suppose it seemed like a good idea at the time.
Of course desperate people fleeing genocide, brutal civil wars and extreme poverty will take pretty short odds if there's a chance of reaching safety or comfort and the people taking their money to send them out to sea in leaking wrecks don't care where the passengers end up.

Sexcrime
(1984)

L'Internationale
INGLESE / ENGLISH 7
L' "Internazionale Australiana"
The "Australian Internationale"
You may take this Australian Internationale for a parody -and Australian English sounds definitely outlandish, rather euphemistically. Yet I think the key points of the song are fully respected. Sure, everything is transferred to local, contemporary issues, using a language that ladies (not all, of course) may find shocking : "Stand up, ya victims of pomm bullshit, The time for top blokes has arrived, Quit wanking off on shitty wi fi, It's time for workers all to thrive”. Drink Foster beer, form cooperatives and let emu warlords know terror (did you know this episode of Australian history, which occurred in 1932 when the army was sent to machine-gun and exterminate emus?) Maybe, Eugène Pottier would be a bit puzzled at first; this amazing version may remind you of Mr Crocodile Dundee far more than of the... (continua)

Long Road
(1995)
Dopo l'11 settembre Eddie Vedder e Mike McCready insieme a Neil Young hanno eseguito Long Road durante il concerto benefico America: A Tribute to Heroes.

Murder by Numbers
(1983)
Scritta da Andy Summers e Sting
B-side del singolo di Every Breath You Take

“War is organised murder and nothing else….politicians who took us to war should have been given the guns and told to settle their differences themselves, instead of organizing nothing better than legalized mass murder”

Walking in Your Footsteps
(1983)
Album Synchronicity

Don't Beat the Girl Out of My Boy
(2018)
Album: Hunter

“Said by Marta Kubišová herself to be her favourite among all her recordings,Tajga Blues ‘69 is also one of the greatest records of its era, and not only in the former Eastern bloc. Few Western singles of the day are as remarkable as this particular few minutes of dramatic balladry and highly political poetics underscored by heavily distorted guitar. Tajga is the arctic region of the northern hemisphere, and appearing so soon after the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, it’s unlikely that the song’s allusion to Siberia as a region of exile would have been missed, however oblique...
Prayer for Marta singer Kubišová recalls dramatic comeback during 1989's Velvet Revolution
Modlitba pro Martu, A Prayer for Marta, is a song that for many people will be forever associated with Czechoslovakia’s Velvet Revolution of 1989. Performed by the 1960s Czech pop star Marta Kubišová, it had previously come to symbolise resistance to the 1968 Soviet-led invasion.
Originally titled just Modlitba, the song was composed by Jiří Brabec with lyrics written especially for Kubišová by Petr Rada. Those inspirational lyrics include a quote from the 17th century Czech educator Comenius along the lines of, the people will one day once again... (continua)

Fuhrer
[1942?]
Si trova in numerose raccolte degli anni '40/'45
Inclusa anche nella compilation intitolata “Kickin' Hitler's Butt: Vintage Anti-Fascist Songs 1940-1944”
Josh White performs solo the amazing ‘Fuehrer’. The song tells of a German soldier, on the Russian front, starving and freezing to death dreaming he could go back home to Berlin. A sad song and beautifully played but not devoid of humour too.

Chain of Fools
(1967)
