This song is about Richard Nixon. In early 1994, Jackie O was diagnosed with cancer. A little later that year, Richard Nixon passed away. During his funeral, the various eulogies given by current and former Presidents, statesmen, and the like were all sugar-coated; they were "respectful." After all, the worst thing that Nixon will be remembered for by the mainstream and the majority of the American public is Watergate. “No Shelter” is a single by Rage Against the Machine that appeared in the soundtrack to the 1998 Godzilla movie, and was the bonus track of the Australian release of their album The Battle of Los Angeles.

It is about how the mass media distracts the public from more important issues in the world and manipulates people’s minds. The placement of this song in the soundtrack is especially ironic, considering how it attacks movies like Godzilla, calling it “pure motherfucking filler” and part of the overall problem the song points out.

On 4 June 2007 Tom Morello, lead guitarist with anti-war band Rage Against the Machine, headlined a benefit gig for Stop the War Coalition in London. On 20 December 2009, Rage Against the Machine made UK music chart history when a "people power" internet campaign succeeded in stopping the X Factor reality show record becoming an all too predictable Christmas number one. 500,000 downloads generated by online social networks got Rage Against the Machine's Killing in the Name to the top spot. The video below of Tom Morello at the Stop the War gig in 2007 was filmed by James O'Malley on his mobile phone.

A song about the Zapatista rebels in Mexico with evident references on the destruction of the Aztec Empire by the Spanish and on the anti-latino race riots of Los Angeles, called the Zoot Suit Riots.
A Zoot Suit is a suit with high-waisted, wide-legged, tight-cuffed pegged trousers and a long coat with wide lapels and wide padded shoulders. This style of clothing was popularized by Hispanics, Italian Americans, African Americans and Filipino Americans during the late 1930s and 1940s.
The Fifth Sun refers to the mythical world-view held by the Aztec people, in which the present world was preceded by four other cycles of creation and destruction.
For Aztec people there had been four worlds, or "Suns" previous to the present universe. These earlier worlds and their inhabitants had been created, then destroyed by the catastrophic action of leadind deity figures. The present world is the fifht sun and tha Aztec saw themselves as "the People of the Sun".

[...]"Alla fine del 1999 esce The Battle of Los Angeles, il terzo album dei RATM.
La prima apparizione pubblica con il materiale del disco viene effettuata al "Late Night With David Letterman", dove, attraverso un collegamento esterno, i RATM eseguono dal vivo a Manhattan "Guerrilla Radio". Il contenuto di "The Battle of L.A." è già anticipato dal pugno chiuso del manifestante in copertina.
Dopo tre anni da "Evil Empire", fra voci più o meno controllate di scioglimenti e separazioni, i RATM tornano in forma splendida : duri, tosti, :censored:. Se possibile ancora più energici dei primi due album. Hard rock, punk, funk da "molotov", hip hop militante. È stato anche riproposto in una versione elettrica e quasi rappata dai Rage Against The Machine.
Reinterpretata da Springsteen in versione elettrica nell'album "High Hopes" (2014) in duetto con Tom Morello.
Interpretata anche in duetto con Pete Seeger nel disco Sowing the Seeds (2006).

Tom Joad è il protagonista del romanzo più famoso di John Steinbeck, "The Grapes of Wrath", uscito negli Stati Uniti nel 1939 e conosciuto in Italia come Furore. Dal libro John Ford ha tratto uno storico film (con Henry Fonda nel ruolo di Tom Joad). Woody Guthrie scrisse la sua ballata Tom Joad quasi dieci anni prima che il boss venisse al mondo, ma anche altri folksinger prima di Springsteen si erano ispirati al personaggio.
