"Rhymes and reasons" è un'espressione che si usa in inglese quando non si vede il motivo o la spiegazione di qualcosa.
"Rhymes and Reasons" is, I think, one of the best songs I’ve ever written. I wrote the song - or started at least - in the shower one morning. It comes from a very real and consistent thought that the children and the flowers are my sisters and my brothers. I do not feel separate from any aspect or from of life. I feel part of it, and bound to it, and the way I expressed the feeling was to use the phrase "the children and the flowers". There is a brotherhood there, and a sisterhood. It’s funny to me that even before the time of women’s liberation there was a desire to uphold that concept. The song is basically autobiographical. It’s not one of those songs where I’ve described someone who has a job to do in the world. I’m describing who that person is - the song is... (continua)

"Paradise" is a song written by John Prine for his father, and recorded for his 1971 debut album, John Prine. Prine also re-recorded the song for his 1986 album, German Afternoons.
The song is about the devastating impact of strip mining for coal, whereby the top layers of soil are blasted off with dynamite or dug away with steam shovels to reach the coal seam below. The song is also about what happened to the area around the Green River in Kentucky because of strip mining. The song references the Peabody Coal Company, and a town called Paradise in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, where the Tennessee Valley Authority operated the Paradise Fossil Plant, a coal-fired electric generating station.
The area has suffered serious economic downturn because of the decline of coal mining, caused mainly by the abundance of natural... (continua)

Merita forse solo ricordare che Ilse Koch, detta "La strega di Buchenwald" per via della sua violenza e sadismo, è stata una sorvegliante in alcuni campi di concentramento e di sterminio e fu moglie di Karl Otto Koch, comandante a Buchenwald e Majdanek. Condannata all'ergastolo, si suicidò in carcere nel 1967.
Invece la IG Farben è stata un'azienda chimica tedesca (formalmente cessata solo nel 2012) che negli anni della guerra fu la principale produttrice dello "Zyklon B", l'acido cianidrico usato nelle camere a gas naziste.

Devo correggere Alessandro, mio carissimo amico, che nel 2008 attribuì la paternità di questo testo al poeta britannico Lascelles Abercrombie (1881-1938). L’autore è un altro Lascelles, di nome Kendrew, americano, vivente, poeta, drammaturgo, sceneggiatore cinematografico.
Lui stesso incise su vinile questa ed altre sue poesie in un album “spoken word” edito nel 1973 ed intitolato “Earth Fungus And The Stuff Of Stars”

Tra il 1830 e il 1840 oltre 50.000 nativi già pacificati e “civilizzati” furono deportati dalle loro terre nel sud degli USA verso l’Oklahoma. Furono marce estenuanti nel corso delle quali morirono migliaia di persone. Il percorso seguito per raggiungere i nuovi territori fu chiamato “The Trail of Tears”, “Il Cammino delle Lacrime”…

"Not only was war music prevalent at home it also had a large effect in Vietnam; the soldiers had their own top forty. Many of the songs they listened to had no war theme, some where about the war, and some of the songs they listened to were not meant to be about the war but the soldiers put their own connotations into the song. For example Peter Paul and Mary’s remake of "Jet Plane" originally by John Denver, was a song about going home. The soldiers would listen to this song and imagine leaving on a Jet Plane back to their homes and families."
