Il est né le 1er septembre 1906 dans une famille de paysans arméniens du petit village d'Adyaman, en Turquie. Il a huit ans lorsque son père est tué par des militaires turcs au cours d'un massacre . Sa mère mourra de maladie, aggravée par la famine qui frappait la population arménienne. Les atrocités du génocide marquent Missak Manouchian pour la vie. Particolarmente duri e diretti sono i versi finali, indirizzati chiaramente a Brassens ed al suo anarchismo individualista intransigente ma, per molti, dal sapore decisamente qualunquista, espresso particolarmente nella famosa canzone "Le pluriel":

This is not your typical, flashy advertisement; this is a message to the world, and it is the simple message of LOVE.
LOVE is the artwork of Rudi-Renoir Appodlt, digital artist and musician residing in Lucerne, Switzerland. The artist purchased billboard ad space himself, supported in part by private donations. WorldArt, the non-profit organization behind the scene, aims to create a global network to promote love through this project.

Con tutta probabilità, si tratta di un tentativo di individuare delle "radici popolari comuni" tra russi e ungheresi dopo certi fatti avvenuti nel 1956; ciononostante, in alcune delle canzoni che formano questa sorta di "risotto", vi sono echi antimilitaristi.

Friends and enemies, for President Bush, (unlike the sincere American), the dollar may be the most important thing.
But for those who believe that honour is greater than the dollar, they are left with no other option, but to fight and die - because they cannot win.
Let us not kill them and let them not kill us.
If it was the others, the day before; Afghanistan, yesterday and Iraq, today - it could be me, tomorrow and you, the day after. When such intimidation to our dignity is in the air, it is expected of all of us to stand up to defend our lives and our pride.
But for those of you, like me, who have been brought up in the way of love and non violence, who prefer neither to fight nor kill, at least join me in my song.

Il 14 giugno 2005 dovevo essere incocciato in chissà quale sito che riportava qualche testo dei Betagarri senza traduzione. Le mie conoscenze della lingua euskara erano e sono rimaste scarse (ma non quelle dell'Anonimo Toscano del XXI Secolo, evidentemente!), tant'è che l'unico commento finora presente in questa pagina abbandonata da tredici anni al "quanto prima" era che la canzone "è in lingua basca". [Sticazzi, direbbe il poeta]. Grazie all'Anonimo, che naturalmente conosce molte più lingue del sottoscritto, questa pagina dedicata a un rifiuto del servizio militare nello stato spagnolo molto alla "betagarriana" può essere finalmente considerata degna di questo nome. Dal primo album dei Betagarri, "L", registrato nel 1994 a Gasteiz (Vitoria in spagnolo) in modo completamente indipendente. Tutte le nove canzoni che contiene sono in basco, ma c'è anche la "Bella Ciao" con ritornello in italiano per la quale si rimanda alla relativa pagina. [RV]

E’ il maggio 1912: la federazione dei lavoratori della terra ha indetto delle manifestazioni per ottenere le otto ore di lavoro giornaliere.
Per evitare che gli scioperi siano vanificati dall’arrivo delle mondine da fuori si organizza una vera e propria campagna di boicottaggio delle forestiere.

Il canto si riferisce a un episodio successo a Ferrera Erbognone, un paesino tra le risaie della Lomellina nel pavese.
E’ il maggio 1912: la federazione dei lavoratori della terra ha indetto delle manifestazioni per ottenere le otto ore di lavoro giornaliere.
Per evitare che gli scioperi siano vanificati dall’arrivo delle mondine da fuori si organizza una vera e propria campagna di boicottaggio delle forestiere.
