Eugene McCarthy for President (if You Love Your Country)
(1968)

Go Tell It on the Mountain

Go Tell It on the Mountain
[1865 ca / 1963]
Parole di Fannie Lou Hamer, combinando, insieme a versi originali, le strofe dell'omonimo inno religioso natalizio ottocentesco e l'invocazione “Let my people go” tratta da un altro spiritual, “Go down, Moses”.

(Continues)

All the Pretty Little Horses (Hush-a-Bye)

Anonymous
All the Pretty Little Horses (Hush-a-Bye)
[XIX secolo, o precedente]

“The slave women who worked in the fields and the house not only had to look after their own children, but those of their white mistresses as well. Thus, many Southerners remember being rocked to sleep by their "black mammies." This song,... (Continues)

Happy Xmas (War is Over)

Happy Xmas (War is Over)

The Comin' of the Roads

The Comin' of the Roads
[196?]

Conscientious Objector (I Shall Die)

Conscientious Objector (I Shall Die)
[1917]
Versi di Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892-1950), poetessa e drammaturga statunitense, militante femminista. Nella raccolta intitolata “Wine from These Grapes” pubblicata nel 1934.

All My Trials, Lord

All My Trials, Lord

Give Peace A Chance

Give Peace A Chance

da Democracy Now

JON WIENER: Well, you know, Lennon wanted to — basically, Lennon is a musician, a songwriter, a performer. He wanted to write a song for the movement, and he did. It was "Give Peace a Chance." It did become the anthem of the anti-war movement. Half a million people sang "Give Peace a Chance" in a demonstration at the Washington Monument in the fall of 1969. Do we have time to listen to my interview with Pete Seeger, talking about what it was like that day?

PETE SEEGER: Well, in November 1969, I guess I faced the biggest audience I had ever faced in my entire life. Hundreds of thousands, how many, I don’t know, but it stretches as far as the eye can see, up the hillside and over the hill, past the Washington Monument.... (Continues)

He Had a Long Chain On

He Had a Long Chain On
‎[1960]‎
Album “The Westward Movement”‎

Whiskey In The Jar

Anonymous

È una delle canzoni tradizionali irlandesi più eseguite ed è stata incisa da artisti come i The Dubliners, The Pogues, Peter, Paul and Mary, The Highwaymen, Roger Whittaker, the Clancy Brothers e Tommy Makem, The Irish Rovers, Poxy Boggards, The Limeliters, King Creosote, The Shatilla Shakers e... The Ballad of the Springhill Mine Disaster

The Ballad of the Springhill Mine Disaster
Lyrics & Music by Peggy Seeger

Peggy Seeger composed "The Ballad of Springhill" (with assistance from Ewan MacColl) based on the 1958 Springhill Mine Disaster
. It was originally performed by MacColl and Seeger as an a cappella duet.
It was subsequently sung by popular folk revival group Peter, Paul, & Mary.
Irish rock stars U2 drew international attention to the memory of the Springhill mining disaster when they included "The Ballad of Springhill" in the playlist for their Joshua Tree Tour in 1987. U2 performed the song at fifteen concerts, although Bono did misrepresent the year in the song by saying "88" and not "58" during a few live performances. In an interview after the 1987 performance on a 25th anniversary television tribute to the Irish band The Dubliners, Bono stated that the first recording of "The Ballad of Springhill" he heard was that sung by Irish folk singer...

(Continues)

Blowin' in the Wind

Blowin' in the Wind
[1962]
Lyrics and music by Bob Dylan
Testo e musica di Bob Dylan
Album: The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan [1963]

«In 1962, Dylan said of the song's background: "I still say that some of the biggest criminals are those that turn their heads away when they see wrong and they know it's wrong. I'm only 21 years old and I know that here's been too many wars...You people over 21 should know better." All that he prefers to add by way of commentary now is: "The first way to answer these questions in the song is by asking them. But lots of people have to first find the wind."»
(dalle note dell'album)

(Continues)

If I Had A Hammer

If I Had A Hammer
[1949]
Testo di Lewis Hays
Musica di Pete Seeger

Lyrics by Lewis Hays
Music by Pete Seeger

If I Had A Hammer
Produced by Tim Brachocki

If I Had A Hammer presents a sixty-year historical overview of significant struggles for increased democracy and social justice in the United States through the life and music of Pete Seeger. Interviews with Seeger and others involved in these various peoples' movements form the backbone of the program. Seeger's narrative ties the documentary together as he relates his life and music to the movements examined. The union, civil rights, peace, women's... (Continues)
