Paul Celan was born Paul Antschel in Romania in 1920, and he became famous for his work in poetry and translation in 1960s Germany. He is one of the many Jewish writers I am studying in my class on authors in exile. Of course, when we say exile, we don’t just mean physical, political, literal exile; the language a writer chooses to write in while permanently abroad, what linguistic exile he/she chooses, is just as important as what country he/she resides in. Though he fled Romania for Vienna, only to relocate to Paris and remain there, becoming a French citizen in 1955, he consciously chose to write poetry in German throughout is life.
Though he had a near-native command of German (thanks to his Germanophile mother and the upbringing she gave him), he molded it, warped it in... (Continues)

La versione inglese, nella traduzione dalla poetessa americana Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892-1950), fu messa in musica nel 1963 dalla compositrice Miriam Gideon (1906-1996) e in seguito da molti altri, specie da gruppi gothic e black metal (come i nostrani – a dispetto del nome francese - Theatres des Vampires), ma l’esecuzione più famosa è di certo quella di Diamanda Galás, in “The Litanies Of Satan” del 1982.

Testo di Haràlambos Vassiliàdis detto il Tsandas, musica di Yannis Papayoannou , detto Psilòs ovvero Patsàs: e gli interpreti più classici furono Sotiria Bellou insieme - nientemento - a Stellakis Perpiniàdis. "Amàn amàn" vale il nostro "ahimé" e contraddistingue quello specifico genere musicale e così pure i caffé dove lo si eseguiva: i famosi Caffé Amàn di Smirne. Freydun Bet-Abram Atturaya (siriaco: ܦ̮ܪܝܕܢ ܐܬܘܪܝܐ; ovvero “Freydun l'Assiro”) (1891 – 1926) fu un medico assiro nato nella città di Charbaksh, nel distretto di Urmia in Iran. Fu mandato dal padre a vivere presso uno zio a Tbilisi, allora nell'Impero Russo, e là studiò medicina. Non appena laureato, cominciò a lavorare nell'Esercito Russo come medico, nel 1915; fu poi trasferito nelle forze russe di stanza in Iran come ufficiale medico e politico; fondò quindi un Comitato Nazionale Assiro a Urmia, provvedendo a mandare 250 giovani assiri in Russia per l'addestramento militare.
Dopo la rivoluzione del febbraio 1917, Freydun Atturaya, Benjamin Bet Arsanis e Baba Bet Parhad fondarono il primo Partito Socialista Assiro. Atturaya completò nell'aprile del 1917 il “Manifesto di Urmia” per un'Assiria libera e unita, scrivendolo in neo-aramaico assiro ed... (Continues)

Le lingue neo-aramaiche, discendenti dirette dell'aramaico antico che è stato utilizzato anche in vaste porzioni della Bibbia (e che era sicuramente anche la lingua parlata in Palestina ai tempi di Gesù Cristo), sono tuttora parlate da circa 600.000 persone. In linea di massima, si tratta di tre idiomi principali simili tra loro, suddivisi in neo-aramaico assiro (la lingua di questo testo), caldeo e Turoyo-Suryat.
