NEL MARE SALATO | IN THE SALT SEA OF HUMANITY'S WEEPING |
Nel mare salato delle lacrime umane | Beneath the salt sea of humanity's weeping |
più esser non può né fondo, né oscuro, | It couldn't be darker, it couldn't be deeper |
macchiato da una corrente di sangue. | It's stained with a bloody red tide. |
Abisso scavato da migliaia d'anni | And thousands of years have created this chasm |
di pietà, di odio e di pena, | Of piety, hatred, and pain |
e per migliaia d'anni, sempre goccia a goccia | And for thousands of years all humanity's weeping |
lacrime vi si son versate. | Flows like a limitless rain. |
E colmo è l'abisso...di lacrime degli ebrei, | So much of this sea has been filled with the sorrows |
e tuttavia non c'è da sbagliarsi: | Endured by the suffering Jews |
But only the tears of the poor ones are bloody |
del ricco, una bianca come la neve. | The rich cry as clear as the dew. |
Ora, solo per i poveri, i mendicanti, gli operai | Yes only the worker, the pauper, the beggar |
è l'abisso rosso di sangue; | Belong to the bloody abyss |
mente i vostri “fratelli”, i ricchi e gli avari, | While those you call “brother,” the rich and the greedy, |
| Fly high overhead in their bliss. |
Già colmo è il mare e straborda. | The ocean flows over and floods out the levees |
che osino gettarsi con coraggio | Yes, where are the ones that will stand at the ready |
nell'abisso, e lottare? | To dive in the chasm and fight ? |
Chi mai libererà alfine il lavoratore | Yes, who will at last free the work from slavery, |
dalla fame e dalla sofferenza eterna? | Give hunger its final relief? |
E chi gli mostrerà la via verso la libertà, | And who will be guiding the pathway to freedom, |
verso la fratellanza, l'uguaglianza e la pace? | To brotherhood, justice and peace? |
Gli abbienti, gli “illuminati”, i religiosi | The children of wealth, the enlightened, the clergy, |
chiaman l'Ebreo a Sion. | Into Zion the call the Hebrews. |
E' la vecchia solfa dei nostri nemici: | We’ve heard this old story before from our enemies: |
“Un ghetto per l'eterno Ebreo!” [1] | “A ghetto for the eternal Jew” |
Pregando e pregando, invocan dai progenitori | With Zion we answer the prayers of our fathers |
una terra, dalle loro sacre tombe; | From deep in their graves they must call |
mentre i poveracci, che penano e patiscon la fame, | While souls who are living are hungry and crying |
| To them we are deaf as the wall. |
Messia ed ebraismo, son morti e sepolti, | Messiah and Jewry are both dead and buried |
un altro messia sta arrivando. | Another messiah is come |
Il lavoratore ebreo – vittima dei ricchi! | The new Jewish worker the banner will carry |
già innalza il vessillo della libertà. | To signal that justice is done. |
Quell'eroe libererà e risanerà il mondo, | The world will be freed and be healed by this hero, |
arriverà fino al fondo dell'abisso! | Who dives to the root of its wound. |
Evviva di Russia, di Lituania e Polonia | In Russia, in Vilna, in Poland all hail now |
l' Unione dei Lavoratori Ebrei! | The Great Jewish Worker’s Bund! |
