THE OLD ORANGE FLUTE | THE OLD ORANGE FLUTE |
In the County Tyrone, near the town of Dungannon | Nella contea di Tyrone, vicino a Dungannon, |
Where many the ructions meself had a hand in | laddove in vari tafferugli ero entrato anch'io |
Bob Williamson lived, a weaver by trade | viveva Bob Williamson, di mestiere tessitore |
And all of us thought him a stout Orange blade. |
On the Twelfth of July as it yearly did come | Il dodici luglio di ogni anno |
Bob played with his flute to the sound of a drum | Bob suonava il suo flauto accompagnato da un tamburo; |
You may talk of your harp, your piano or lute | raccontagli pure della tua arpa, del tuo piano o del tuo liuto, |
But none can compare with the Old Orange Flute. | nulla era pari al vecchio flauto arancio. |
Bob, the deceiver, he took us all in; | Bob l'imbroglione ci spiazzò tutti quanti; |
Turned Papist himself and forsook the old cause | diventò papista anche lui e dimenticò la vecchia causa |
That gave us our freedom, religion and laws. |
Now, boys of the townland made some noise upon it | Ora, i ragazzi dei dintorni ne mormorarono un po', |
And Bob had to fly to the province of Connaught | e Bob dovette scappare nella provincia del Connaught; |
He fled with his wife and his fixings to boot | se ne andò con sua moglie e i suoi orpelli, |
And along with the latter his Old Orange Flute. |
At the chapel on Sunday to atone for past deeds | In cappella alla domenica, per espiare il passato, |
He'd say Pater and Aves and counted his brown beads | diceva paternostri e avemarie e sgranava il rosario, |
'Til after some time, at the priest's own desire | finché dopo un po' assecondò il suo parroco |
He went with that old flute to play in the choir. |
He went with that old flute for to play for the Mass | Venne col suo vecchio flauto a suonare alla messa, |
But the instrument shivered and sighed, oh, alas | ma lo strumento tremò e sospirò: "Ma no!" |
And try though he would, though it made a great noise | E per quanto provasse e facesse un gran rumore, |
The flute would play only "The Protestant Boys." | il flauto suonava solo "The Protestant Boys". |
Bob jumped and he stared and got in a flutter | Bob sobbalzò e sgranò gli occhi in un fremito, |
And threw the old flute in the blessed holy water | poi gettò il flauto nella benedetta acqua santa. |
He thought that this charm would bring some other sound; | Pensò che con quella malìa avrebbe portato ad altri suoni, |
When he tried it again, it played "Croppies Lie Down." |
Now, for all he could whistle and finger and blow | Ora, per quanto suonasse e muovesse le dita e soffiasse |
To play Papish music he found it no go | per suonare musica papista, scoprì che non c'era verso: |
"Kick the Pope" and "The Boyne Water" it freely would sound | suonava tranquillo "Kick the Pope" e "The Boyne Water", |
But one Papish squeak in it couldn't be found. | ma di papista nemmeno una nota. |
At the council of priests that was held the next day | Al consiglio dei preti che si svolse il giorno dopo |
They decided to banish the old flute away | decisero di mettere al bando il vecchio flauto; |
They couldn't knock heresy out of it's head | non ci fu verso di togliergli l'eresia dalla testa, |
So they bought Bob a new one to play in instead. |
Now the poor was doomed, and its fate was pathetic | Ormai il poveretto aveva la sorte segnata, e il suo destino fu patetico: |
'Twas fastened and burnt at the stake as heretic. | Venne legato e bruciato al palo come eretico. |
As the flames soared around , you could hear a strange noise | E mentre le fiamme gli si alzavano attorno, si poté sentire uno strano rumore: |
'Twas the Old Flute still a-whistlin' "The Protestant Boys". | era il vecchio flauto che ancora suonava "The Protestant Boys". |
The Protestant Boys, Croppies lie down, Kick the Pope e The Boyne Water sono altrettante canzoni di ambiente orangista. |
