MINERS (HOW THE FUTURE WILL FORGET THE DEAD IN WAR)MINATORI
(COME IL FUTURO SCORDERÀ I MORTI IN GUERRA)
There was a whispering in my hearth,
A sigh of the coal,
Grown wistful of a former earth
It might recall.
S'ebbe un sussurro nel mio focolare,
un sospiro del carbone
fattosi malinconico, forse nel ricordo
d'una terra d'antiche ere.
I listened for a tale of leaves
And smothered ferns,
Frond-forests, and the low sly lives
Before the fauns.
Ascoltai raccontare di foglie
e di felci sepolte e soffocate,
di foreste frondose, delle furtive forme
di vita sotterranea prima dei fauni.
My fire might show steam-phantoms simmer
From Time's old cauldron,
Before the birds made nests in summer,
Or men had children.
But the coals were murmuring of their mine,
And moans down there
Of boys that slept wry sleep, and men
Writhing for air.
Ma il carbone mormorava della sua miniera,
e i gemiti laggiù sotto, di ragazzi
che dormivano contorti, e d'uomini
che si torcevano per avere aria.
And I saw white bones in the cinder-shard,
Bones without number.
Many the muscled bodies charred,
And few remember.
ardente, ossa innumere.
Tanti corpi carbonizzati coi loro muscoli;
pochi ricordano.
I thought of all that worked dark pits
Of war, and died
Digging the rock where Death reputes
Peace lies indeed.
Pensai a chi costruiva le buie trincee
di guerra, e morì
scavando la roccia ove la Morte reputa
che in ogni caso stia la Pace.
Comforted years will sit soft-chaired,
In rooms of amber;
The years will stretch their hands, well-cheered
By our life's ember;
Su sedie soffici comodi anni staran seduti
in stanze ambrate,
dal calore ardente della nostra vita;
The centuries will burn rich loads
With which we groaned,
Whose warmth shall lull their dreaming lids,
While songs are crooned;
But they will not dream of us poor lads,
Left in the ground.
I secoli bruceranno i ricchi carichi
coi quali noi soffrimmo gemendo,
mentre s'intoneran canzoni a bassa voce;
lasciati sottoterra.
