| Version française – J’Y ÉTAIS – Marco Valdo M.I. – 2016
|
I WAS THERE | J’Y ÉTAIS |
| |
In what used to be a trench | Dans ce qui fut la tranchée, |
Now, a soldier's body | Maintenant une flaque boueuse, |
Lies in a muddy pool, | Le cadavre d’un soldat offre |
The only support he has. | Encore le seul support. |
| |
On the right, against the leftovers | Juste contre le pan de mur, |
Of a wall, a brother in arms | Un camarade : |
Is leaning without both legs, | Sans ses deux jambes, |
With death on his face | La mort sur son visage |
| |
Only his back can be seen. | Le dos seul encore visible |
Next to the narrow planks | À côté de l’étroite planche, |
An officer's sticking out, | Poussé, pas trébuché |
He isn't stumbling, yet. | L’officier. |
| |
He's shouting like a madman, | Gueule à tue-tête |
His arms are open wide. | Tandis que les bras déployés |
The end of his battle | La boue recouvre toute |
Is covered with mud | La fin de son combat. |
| |
And the body of a man | Le corps d’un homme |
Is leaning on the barbed wire | Pend au fil barbelé, |
He was hit under his helmet | Touché sous son casque |
His face is empty now | Le visage sans face. |
| |
If you tell this horror, | Raconte cette horreur, |
Don't tell it to me. | Mais pas à moi, |
I need not know more, | Ce n’est pas nécessaire, |
I was there. | J’y étais. |
| |
Two men on the battlefield, | Et l’un contre l’autre s’affrontent |
The one challenging the other | Deux hommes dans le champ |
Who's going to die first | À qui le premier quittera cette vie ; |
And they soon become heroes | Mais tous deux, de toute façon, seront des héros. |
| |
You hear them singing at night | Et la nuit, on les entend chanter |
From one trench to the other | De la tranchée de l’autre côté. |
This way the enemy's voice | Ainsi résonnent les voix |
Is sounding in the darkness | De l’ennemi. |
| |
Lying in the silence of death | Et silencieux sur son dos, |
And covered with a flag | Couvert par un drapeau, |
The man without his legs | L’homme sans jambes |
Can now go back home | Peut rentrer chez lui. |
| |
If you tell this horror, | Raconte cette horreur, |
Don't tell it to me. | Mais pas à moi, |
I need not know more, | Ce n’est pas nécessaire, |
I was there. | J’y étais. |
| |
Then soldiers have fun in town | En ville, le soldat fait la fête |
With the pay they've been given | Avec ce qu’il a reçu, |
In every bed of the town | Alors que dans tous les lits de la ville, |
They pay for making love | On paye pour l’amour. |
| |
And sure over there in the capital | En sûreté, plus loin, à la capitale, |
With a glass of wine in their hands | Le verre de vin à la main, |
The leaders are drinking a toast | Les messieurs en haut-de-forme boivent à la santé |
To nation and fatherland | De la nation et de la patrie. |
| |
If you tell all these lies | Raconte ce mensonge, |
Don't tell them to me. | Mais pas à moi, |
I need not know more, | Ce n’est pas nécessaire, |
I was there. | J’y étais. |
| |
And there I found my death. | J’ai trouvé là ma mort |
Though I was forgotten, | Et bien que je vais être oublié, |
Like an accurate compass | Telle une boussole précise |
Death is showing me | Cette fois, elle indique |
The way I have to go. | Mon chemin. |
