ACEITUNEROS (ANDALUCES DE JAÉN) | THE OLIVE HARVESTERS |
| |
Andaluces de Jaén, | Andalusians of Jaén, |
aceituneros altivos, | proud harvesters of olives, |
decidme en el alma: ¿quién, | tell me from your soul, then, |
quién levantó los olivos? | who made the olive groves? |
| |
No los levantó la nada, | They did not come from nothing, |
ni el dinero, ni el señor, | from money, nor the masters, |
sino la tierra callada, | only from the silent earth, |
el trabajo y el sudor. | and from sweat and toil. |
| |
Unidos al agua pura | United with pure water, |
y a los planetas unidos, | united with the planets, |
los tres dieron la hermosura | the three made the beauty |
de los troncos retorcidos. | of the twining trunks. |
| |
Levántate, olivo cano, | Rise, white olive tree, |
dijeron al pie del viento. | they said at the wind’s feet. |
Y el olivo alzó una mano | And the olive raised an arm |
poderosa de cimiento. | weighty as concrete. |
| |
Andaluces de Jaén, | Andalusians of Jaén, |
aceituneros altivos, | proud harvesters of olives, |
decidme en el alma: ¿quién | tell me from your soul, then, |
amamantó los olivos? | who nursed the olive groves? |
| |
Vuestra sangre, vuestra vida, | Your blood, your lives, |
no la del explotador | not the exploiters’ |
que se enriqueció en la herida | who were enriched by |
generosa del sudor. | your sweat’s generous stream. |
| |
No la del terrateniente | Not that of the owner |
que os sepultó en la pobreza, | who buried you in poverty, |
que os pisoteó la frente, | who beat at your brows, |
que os redujo la cabeza. | who lowered your gaze. |
| |
Árboles que vuestro afán | Trees that your zeal |
consagró al centro del día | blessed at midday |
eran principio de un pan | were the source of bread |
que sólo el otro comía. | that only others ate. |
| |
¡Cuántos siglos de aceituna, | How many ages of olives, |
los pies y las manos presos, | fettered feet and hands, |
sol a sol y luna a luna, | suns on suns, and moons on moons |
pesan sobre vuestros huesos! | weigh on your bones? |
| |
Andaluces de Jaén, | Andalusians of Jaén, |
aceituneros altivos, | proud harvesters of olives, |
pregunta mi alma: ¿de quién, | tell me from your soul, then, |
de quién son estos olivos? | whose are these olive groves? |
| |
Jaén, levántate brava | Jaén, rise bravely |
sobre tus piedras lunares, | from your lunar stone, |
no vayas a ser esclava | you’ll not be enslaved |
con todos tus olivares. | nor all your olive groves. |
| |
Dentro de la claridad | Within the clarity |
del aceite y sus aromas, | of oil and its aromas, |
indican tu libertad | they reveal your liberty |
la libertad de tus lomas. | the liberty of your loam. |
