Ero povero ma disertore
e disertai dalle mie frontiere
e Ferdinando l'impé', l'imperatore
che mi ha perseguità.

Valli e monti ho scavalcato
e dai gendarmi ero inseguito,
quando una sera mi addo', mi addormentai
e mi svegliai incatenà.

Incatenato le mani e i piedi
e in tribunale mi hanno portato
ed il pretore mi ha do', mi ha domandato:
" Perché mai sei incatenà? ".

Io gli risposi francamente:
" Camminavo per la foresta
quando un pensiero mi vie', mi viene in testa:
di non fare ma' più il soldà ".

Caro padre, che sei già morto,
e tu, madre, che vivi ancora,
se vuoi vedere tuo figlio alla, alla tortura,
condannato senza ragion.

O compagni che marciate,
che marciate al suon della tromba,
quando sarete su la, su la mia tomba
griderete: pietà di me!

I spent happy days
crossed mountains and seas
and one night i fell asleep
I awake and found myself tied up.

They had tied my hands and feet
and sent me off to prison
the Magistrate asked me
why I had deserted.

I answered truthfully
that one day in the forest
a thought entered my mind
I wouldn't be a soldier anymore
