Bisanzio
Francesco GucciniOriginal | English version by Riccardo Venturi |
BISANZIO | BYZANTHIUM |
Anche questa sera la luna è sorta | So, even tonight the moon has risen |
affogata in un colore troppo rosso e vago, | Drowned in too red, too vague a colour |
Vespero non si vede, si è offuscata, | Υou cannot see Vesper, it’s growing dark |
la punta dello stilo si è spezzata. | The point of the stylus has broken |
Che oroscopo puoi trarre questa sera, Mago? | What horoscope can you cast tonight, Magician? |
Io Filemazio, protomedico, matematico, astronomo, forse saggio, | I, Philematios, archiater, mathematician, astronomer, |
ridotto come un cieco a brancicare attorno, | Maybe a sage, groping in the dark like a blind man, |
non ho la conoscenza od il coraggio | I have not the knowledge, or the courage |
per fare quest'oroscopo, per divinar responso, | To cast this horoscope, to divine an oracle |
e resto qui a aspettare che ritorni giorno | And I stay here waiting for the dawn to come... |
And I must say, I must say that I am maybe too old to understand |
che ho perso la mia mente in chissà quale abuso, od ozio, | That I lost my faith in no matter what abuse or otium |
| Or are the stars changing in the equinoctial nights? |
O forse io, forse io, ho sottovalutato questo nuovo dio. | Or, maybe I have underestimated this new god, for sure, |
I feel, I see in the stars that something is changing |
| But it is only a sign that doesn’t tell me how and when.. |
Me ne andavo l'altra sera, quasi inconsciamente, | On last evening I was walking almost unconciously |
giù al porto a Bosphoreion là dove si perde | To the Bosphoreion harbour, where dryland does fade |
la terra dentro al mare fino quasi al niente | In the sea and becomes a vague infinite |
e poi ritorna terra e non è più occidente: | And when back on dryland, it's another continent, |
| And the sea doesn't matter if it was blue or green |
Sentivo i canti osceni degli avvinazzati, | I heard groups of drunkards singing absurd songs, |
di gente dallo sguardo pitturato e vuoto... | With their painted eyes, with their empty glances |
ippodromo, bordello e nordici soldati, | A hippodrome, a brothel, soldiers from the North |
Romani e Greci urlate dove siete andati... | Tell me, Romans and Greeks, where have you gone? |
Sentivo bestemmiare in Alamanno e in Goto... | I heard bloody oaths in Alemannic and Gothic... |
Città assurda, città strana di questo imperatore sposo di puttana, | Strange city, absurd city of this emperor, bridegroom of a whore |
di plebi smisurate, labirinti ed empietà, | Of countless mobs, of labyrinths, of impiety |
di barbari che forse sanno già la verità, | Of barbarians who, maybe, do already know the truth |
| Of philosophers, of heterae, hanging between two epochs and two worlds |
Fortuna e età han deciso per un giorno non lontano, | My wealth and age decided for a day not far to come |
| And then, fate would ask her that she would give me her hand, but... |
Bisanzio è forse solo un simbolo insondabile, | Byzanthium’s maybe only an imperscrutable symbol, |
segreto e ambiguo come questa vita, | Secret and ambiguous just like this life |
Bisanzio è un mito che non mi è consueto, | Byzanthium is a world I’m not accustomed to, |
Bisanzio è un sogno che si fa incompleto, | Byzanthium is a dream not coming to an end |
Bisanzio forse non è mai esistita | Byzanthium, maybe, has never existed |
e ancora ignoro e un'altra notte è andata, | And I still don’t know. Another night has gone |
Lucifero è già sorto, e si alza un po' di vento, | Lucifer’s already risen, there’s a blow of wind, |
c'è freddo sulla torre o è l'età mia malata, | It is cold on the tower or it’s my sick age |
confondo vita e morte e non so chi è passata... | I can’t tell life from death, which of the two has gone |
mi copro col mantello il capo e più non sento, | I cover my head with my mantle, I can’t hear anything more |
e mi addormento, mi addormento, mi addormento... | And I fall asleep, I fall asleep, I fall asleep. |
