This song speaks metaphorically about the restrictions forced onAfrican-Americans before the changes wrought by the Civil Rights Movement of the Sixties. For example, the words of the first verse are: “If you miss me at the back of the bus/And you can’t find menowhere/Come on over to the front of the bus/I’ll be sittin’ right there.”
Scritta nel 1963 da Charles "Carver" Neblett, uno dei membri originari del gruppo The SNCC Freedom Singers, sulla melodia della tradizionale "O Mary Don’t You Weep”.

(Alessandro)
If you miss me at the back of the bus
You can't find me nowhere
Oh come on over to the front of the bus
Because I'll be riding up there
I'll be riding up there, I'll be riding up there
Come on over to the front of the bus
Because I'll be riding up there

If you miss me on the picket line
You can't find me nowhere
Come on over to the city jail
Because I'll be rooming over there
I'll be rooming over there
I'll be rooming over there oh
Come on over to the city jail
Because I'll be rooming over there

If you miss me at the Mississippi river
You can't find me nowhere
Come on over to the swimming pool
Because I'll be swimming over there
I'll be swimming over there, over there
I'll be swimming right there
Come on over to the swimming pool
Because I'll be swimming over there

If you miss me in the cotton fields
You can't find me nowhere
Come on over to the boating booth
Because I'll be a boating right there
I'll be boating right there, right there
I'll be boating right there
Well come on over to the boating booth
Because I'll be boating right there

SI NO EM TROBES DARRERA L'AUTOBÚS

Si no em trobes darrera l´autobús
Si no em trobes darrera l´autobús
i no em trobes pas enlloc.

Oh, oh, oh.
Vine cap al davant de l´autobús
Tu em trobaràs allà.

Tu em trobaràs allà.
Vine cap al davant de l´autobús
Tu em trobaràs allà.

Si no em trobes a la concentració
i no em trobes pas enlloc.

Oh, oh, oh.

i no em trobes pas enlloc.

Oh, oh, oh,
Vine cap a la piscina amb mi.
Jo estaré banyant-me allà.

Il titolo originale è “If You Miss Me At The Back Of The Bus” (e non “If You Miss Me From The Back Of The Bus”).

Seguono Belafonte (“Ballads, Blues And Boasters”, 1964, con il titolo “Back On The Bus”) e la Congregation of Brown Chapel (nel disco collettivo “Freedom Songs: Selma, Alabama”, Folkways Records, 1965).

We Shall Overcome - Carnegie Hall Concert
Ballads, Blues And Boasters
Freedom Songs: Selma, Alabama
