Words by Woody Guthrie
Music adapted from the Baptist hymn "When the World's on Fire" (Oh My Loving Brother)

[CCG/AWS Staff]

woody guthrieThis Land Is Your Land" is one of the United States' most famous folk songs. Its lyrics were written by Woody Guthrie in 1940 on an existing melody, in response to Irving Berlin's "God Bless America", which Guthrie considered unrealistic and complacent. Tired of hearing Kate Smith sing it on the radio, he wrote a response originally called "God Blessed America for Me". Guthrie varied the lyrics over time, sometimes including more overtly political verses than appear in recordings or publications.

Guthrie used the melody of "Oh, My Loving Brother", a Baptist gospel hymn that also inspired the Carter Family's "Little Darlin', Pal of Mine." He wrote the song in 1940 and recorded it in 1944. The song was not published until 1951, when it was included in a mimeographed booklet of ten songs with typed lyrics and hand drawings. The booklet was sold for twenty-five cents, and copyrighted in 1945.

The first known professionally printed publication was in 1956 by Ludlow Music (now a unit of The Richmond Organization), which administered the publishing rights to Guthrie's tune. Ludlow later issued versions with piano and guitar accompaniments.

In 2002, it was one of 50 recordings chosen that year by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry.

The song was sung by Springsteen and Pete Seeger, accompanied by Seeger's grandson, Tao Rodríguez-Seeger, at We Are One: The Obama Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial on January 18, 2009. The song was restored to the original lyrics (including the 'There was a big high wall there' and 'Nobody living can ever stop me' verses) for this performance (as per Pete Seeger's request) with the exception of a change in the end of the 'Relief Office' verse to "As they stood hungry, I stood there whistling, This land was made for you and me."

Wikipedia

This Land is your Land è una celebre canzone tradizionale statunitense scritta da Woody Guthrie nel 1940.

Infatti il titolo originale col quale This Land is your Land era stata composta è God Blessed America for me

Chi siamo, “you and me”, chi è il “we” dello “yes we can” e del “we the people”?

(Alessandro Portelli)
This land is your land This land is my land
From California to the New York island;
From the red wood forest to the Gulf Stream waters
This land was made for you and me.

As I was walking that ribbon of highway,
I saw above me that endless skyway:
I saw below me that golden valley:
This land was made for you and me.

I've roamed and rambled and I followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts;
And all around me a voice was sounding:
This land was made for you and me.

When the sun came shining, and I was strolling,
And the wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling,
As the fog was lifting a voice was chanting:
This land was made for you and me.

As I went walking I saw a sign there
And on the sign it said "No Trespassing."
But on the other side it didn't say nothing,
That side was made for you and me.

In the shadow of the steeple I saw my people,
By the relief office I seen my people;
As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking
Is this land made for you and me?

Nobody living can ever stop me,
As I go walking that freedom highway;
Nobody living can ever make me turn back
This land was made for you and me.

dalla California all’isola di New York

Ho girato e vagato e inseguito i miei passi
e tutto intorno a me una voce risuonava

vicino all’Ufficio Assistenza ho visto la mia gente

dalla California all’Isola di New York,

e contemplavo davanti a me la valle dorata, ho detto:

Ho girato e ho vagato e ho seguito i miei stessi passi
attraverso le sabbie abbaglianti dei deserti adamantini
e tutto intorno a me una voce riecheggiava:

tra campi di grano ondeggianti e nuvole di polvere rotolanti;

mentre percorro la grande strada della libertà;

davanti all'Ufficio Assistenza ho visto la mia gente:

Maybe you've been working as hard as you're able,
But you've just got crumbs from the rich man's table,
And maybe you're thinking, was it truth or fable,
That this land was made for you and me.

Woodland and grassland and river shoreline,
To everything living, even little microbes,
Fin, fur, and feather, we're all here together,
This land was made for you and me.

Forse hai lavorato duro quanto puoi

THIS LAND IS NOT OUR LAND

As I was walking an endless breadline,
My landlord gave me a two-week deadline.
The local paper printed a better headline:
"This Land Is Not For You And Me!"

This land is their land. It is not our land.
From your plush apartment to your Cadillac car land,
From your Wall Street office to your Hollywood star land,
This land is not for you and me.

And take your slogan and kindly stow it.
If this is our land, you'd never know it.
Let's get together and overthrow it.
This land was made for you and me.

Springsteen's Verses

During The River Tour and the Born In The U.S.A. Tour, Bruce Springsteen usually used the chorus and three verses (verse 1, verse 2, and verse 3 below), and occasionally he added one of three more verses. The chorus and the six verses are:

The chorus, verse 1, verse 2, and verse 3 are from the original Woodie Guthrie version. Verse 4 is written by Springsteen. He used it eight times in Europe in May 1981. Starting from the second performance (28 Apr 1981 in Paris), he modified that verse to include a reference to the Brixton riot that took place on 11 Apr 1981. Verse 5 has some similarities to a verse that Guthrie occasionally used: "Nobody living can ever stop me / As I go walking that freedom highway / Nobody living can ever make me turn back / This land was made for you and me". It seems that Springsteen intended to sing that verse but he forgot the lyrics, so he made them up on the spot (see the live 14 Sep 1981 version). Verse 6 is a verse that Guthrie occasionally used.

When Springsteen performed THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND with Pete Seeger and Tao Rodríguez-Seeger during the Barack Obama inaugural celebration concert "We Are One" on 18 Jan 2009, two verses were performed for the first time by Springsteen. These two verses were also performed on 03 May 2009 during The Clearwater Concert. One of these two verses was also performed on 15 Mar 2012 during the South By Southwest music festival and on 18 Oct 2012 during the Barack Obama election rally in Parma, OH.

tutti i miei sogni dove li ho messi

del gospel “When the world's on fire” (Quando il mondo andrà a fuoco), più
“This Land is your Land”, però non è tutta qui perché Woody Guthrie popola

Oggi:
“This Land is your Land” oltre che dal suo compositore, è stata eseguita nel tempo in differenti versioni da molti cantanti tra cui Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Johnny Cash e Bruce Springsteen ed altri ancora… fino a l’ultima, per ora, di Massimo Liberatori con la Società dei Musici.

THIS LAND È (THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND)

This land is your land this land is my land
From California to the New York island
From the Redwood forrest to the Gulf Steam waters
This land was made for you and me

E' la tua terra è anche la mia
Comunque vada comunque sia
I muri sono dentro me e te
Ma la terra è fatta per me e per te

This land is your land this land is my land
From California to the New York Island
From the Redwood forrest to the Gulf Steam waters
This land was made for you and me

Nostra terra è da New York all'Appennino

This land is your land this land is my land
From California to the New York Island
Nostra terra è da New York a l'Appennino

Dalla California all’Illinois
Dalle montagne alle dolci valli
Questa terra è per tutti noi

Mentre vagavo sull’autostrada
Ero perduto nei sogni miei
Il vento forte mi ripeteva
Questa terra è per tutti noi

Ho girovagato in mille Stati
Ho visto gente scordata ormai
La nebbia intorno che mi ricordava
Questa terra è per tutti noi

Campi di grano vaste praterie
Vecchi contadini e cowboy
Un’antica quercia che mi sussurrava
Questa terra è per tutti noi

Non c’è nessuno che può fermarmi
Ho la libertà nei pensieri miei
Per nessun motivo tornerei indietro
Questa terra è per tutti noi

E’ la tua terra è la mia terra
Dalla California all’Illinois
Dalle montagne alle dolci valli
Questa terra è per tutti noi

med fält och åkrar
och varv och gruvor
landet, det tillhör
dej och mej

Med skär och kobbar
och djupa fjärdar
med ljusa hagar
och svarta tjärnar
med sina blånande
berg i fjärran
landet, det tillhör
dej och mej

Det här är ditt land
Det här är mitt land
från Ales stenar
till norra Lappland
från Bohus klippor
till Gotlands raukar
Landet, det tillhör
dej och mej

Jag åkte norrut
längs Höga kusten
när skogen rodnade
Det var om hösten
Och havet glittrade
i morgonluften
i landet som tillhör
dej och mej

Jag stod på toppen
av Kebnekaise
och såg på solen
som aldrig sjunker
på myr och mossar
på fjäll och forsar
och på landet som tillhör
dej och mej

Det här är ditt land
Det här är mitt land
från Ales stenar
till norra Lappland
från Bohus klippor
till Gotlands raukar
Landet, det tillhör
dej och mej

Jag stod där hemma
när dimman lättar
Jag stod bland rapsfält
och klara bäckar
där boken grönskar
och storken häckar
i landet som tillhör
dej och mej

Det var på kvällen
Jag stod vid stranden
under Vintergatan
och Karlavagnen
Jag tog min älskade
hårt i handen

Dafydd Iwan's Welsh version

Qui il testo completo
Here complete lyrics

Dafydd Iwan.
Dafydd Iwan.

Dafydd Iwan was born in 1943 in Brynaman, a village on the western edge of the South Wales Coalfield, in an area where Welsh was still the predominant community language. By a strange coincidence, the previous year had seen the birth of another icon of the pop world, John Cale (of Velvet Underground fame), in the nearby village of Garnant, although their musical, cultural and ideological paths would be strikingly different in many ways. Both John Cale’s and Dafydd Iwan’s mothers were teachers by profession, but while John Cale’s father was a coal miner, Dafydd Iwan’s was a Nonconformist minister. When Dafydd was twelve years of age, his father accepted a call to pastor a church in the village of Llanuwchllyn in the Bala area of central north Wales, a rural area very different from Brynaman, but similar to the extent that Welsh was the everyday language of the community. The family’s move to Llanuwchllyn in the mid 1950s also meant that Dafydd Iwan’s teenage years were spent in fairly close proximity to the Tryweryn valley at the very time the Liverpool Corporation was seeking to drown it. The move also brought him into close proximity with the senior camp of the influential youth movement, Urdd Gobaith Cymru (The Welsh League of Youth, lit. ‘The League of the Hope of Wales’), situated in a converted mansion on the shores of Bala Lake. Working at the camp during school holidays brought Dafydd Iwan into contact with young Welsh-speakers from all parts of Wales, and it was there that he first began to perform informally on the guitar.

There are three matters relating to Dafydd Iwan’s early upbringing which ought, perhaps, to be highlighted. Firstly, it was thoroughly Welsh — apart from his secondary-school education, which was for the most part through the medium of English. Such a practice was normal at the time, even in those areas where Welsh was the predominant community language, and was satirized by Dafydd Iwan in a humorous protest song he wrote in 1967, ‘Cân yr Ysgol’ (‘The School Song’), in which he contrasts the Welshness of the community in which he was raised with the Englishness of his schooling in that community, except for ‘an occasional lesson in Welsh, fair play!/Because I was a little Welshman!’ By ‘a thoroughly Welsh upbringing’, one does not only mean that he was reared in a community in which Welsh was the normal everyday language, but also that he was steeped in traditional Welsh culture. Both of his parents were university graduates, who were well-versed in the culture of Welsh-speaking Wales and committed to promoting that culture, a commitment which included giving their children a good grounding in it.

One aspect of that grounding is the next matter which needs to be emphasised, namely that Dafydd Iwan's upbringing gave him ample opportunity to perform inpublic from a very early age. Dafydd was not a shy child, and during his childhood and youth he was to perform regulary in public at various religious and cultural activities organized by his father's chapel and on an inter-chapel level, not to mention the plethora of eisteddfodau (competitive cultural festivals) which exist in Welsh-speaking Wales in all shapes and sizes and at all levels, local, regional and national. Dafydd Iwan's upbringing, then, not only gave him a good grounding in traditional Welsh culture, but also made him an experienced public performer.

His upbringing also led naturally to his becoming a Welsh nationalist in political terms. His parents were both ardent nationalists, and (as has already been noted) his paternal grandfather, Fred Jones - another Nonconformist minister - was one of the founding members of Plaid Cymru in 1925. Indeed, being a member of Plaid Cymru was such a family affair that Dafydd Iwan could claim in 1966 that around 120 members of his family were party members.

But there is another sense in which his upbringing led naturally to his becoming a Welsh nationalist. For historical and geographical reasons, loyalty to the nation and national identity has often played second fiddle in Wales to more local or regional allegiances. Part of the reason for this is the divisive nature of Wales’s mountainous terrain; another is that Wales has never experienced a strong central national government and has had until very recently few national institutions. Furthermore, from the late Middle Ages, the ruling classes in Wales became increasingly anglicized in language and culture, and more and more London-centric in their concerns and abode, with no middle class of any significance developing until the rapid growth of urbanization and industrialization during the nineteenth century. In recent centuries, then, the nearest Welsh cultural life has often come to an ‘aristocracy’ in terms of national leadership, has been the social grouping one might describe as ‘ministers of religion and teachers’, a grouping whose members, as a result of educational opportunities and the often peripatetic nature of their calling, are not normally as deep-rooted in one particular community and have horizons which are frequently broader than most. It is no surprise, then, to see one author note that ‘schoolmasters and ministers...have formed the backbone of so many aspects of the nationalist movement in Wales’. Neither is such a grouping unfamiliar to ballad students, since throughout Europe ‘ministers of religion and teachers’ have often in the past been the first port of call in a given community for collectors of folk traditions seeking informants.

We see this heightened sense of national rather than local identity not only in Dafydd Iwan’s immediate family background, but also in his own personal experience. For example, he begins the autobiography he published in 1981 by stating that his upbringing and dispersed family roots mean that he does not feel a strong sense of belonging to any one particular locality; rather, he says, his commitment is to Wales as a unit.[24] This is stated very clearly in one of Dafydd Iwan’s earliest songs, ‘Mae’n Wlad i Mi’, based on ‘This Land is Your Land’ by the influential American singer-songwriter, Woody Guthrie. The song’s theme is that every part of Wales is the heritage of every Welsh person.

Mae’r wlad hon yn eiddo i ti a mi.

Mi fum yn crwydro hyd lwybrau unig,

Mae’n wlad i mi ac mae’n wlad i tithau,
O gopa’r Wyddfa i lawr i’w thraethau,
O’r De i’r Gogledd, o Fôn i Fynwy,
Mae’r wlad hon yn eiddo i ti a mi.

Mi welais ddyfroedd Dyfyrdwy’n loetran,

Mae’n wlad i mi ac mae’n wlad i tithau,

TÄMÄ MAA ON MEIDÄN

Tää maa on sun maa, tää maa on mun maa
Lapin perukoilta Hankoniemeen asti.
Vaaran rintehiltä lakeuden rantaan
tämä maa on tehty meille vaan.

Tätä maata kuljen, saloja ja soita,
metsätaipaleita, hallaraivioita
sinitaivas ylläin kulkuani ohjaa.
Tämä maa on tehty meille vaan.

Kun taival jatkuu soraharjanteita,
rantahietikoita, naavakuusikoita
niin kaikkialta sen laulun kuulen:
tämä maa on tehty meille vaan.

Aamun autereessa viljapellon ylle
usvapilvi nousee maalle seesteiselle
ja järven aallot tutun laulun toistaa:
tämä maa on tehty meille vaan.

Vapaana kuljen vapaassa maassa,
ei vapauttamme voi meiltä ottaa,
ei kieltotaulut voi sitä muuttaa:
tämä maa on tehty meille vaan.

Jos varjon maassa tää kansa kulkee,
jos nälkä, puute sen syliin sulkee,
niin silloinkin voi sen laulun kuulla:
tämä maa on tehty meille vaan.

Vapauden tietä siis kulkekaamme,
oikeutta kansan puolustakaamme.
Sen merkki aina olkoon tää laulu:
tämä maa on tehty meille vaan.

ĈI TIU LANDO FARITA ESTIS POR VI KAJ MI:

Ĉi tiu terpeco estas via lando
Ĉi tiu terpeco estas mia lando
El Kalifornio al la Novjorko insulo;

Mi vidis sub min l' ora valo;
Ĉi tiu lando farita estis por vi kaj mi.

Mi vagis kaj vagis kaj mi sekvis miajn spurojn
Al la scintilantaj sabloj de diamantajn dezertojn;
Kaj ĉiuĉirkaŭ min iu voĉo sonis:
Ĉi tiu lando farita estis por vi kaj mi.

Kiam brilanta suno aperis, kaj mi promenis,
Kaj skuas tritikojn kampojn kaj nuboj de polvoj leviĝis
Kiam la nebulo estis levante, iu skandanta voĉo diris:
Ĉi tiu lando farita estis por vi kaj mi.

Dum mi iris marŝante tie signon mi vidis

Proksime helpoficejo mian popolon mi vidis;
Dum ili staris tie malsata, mi staris tie petante
Ĉu tiu lando farita estis por vi kaj mi?

Neniu vivanta povos haltigi min,
Dum mi iros promeni la granda libereca strato;
Neniu vivanta povos iam faru min returni
Ĉi tiu lando farita estis por vi kaj mi.

As I was walking that ribbon of highway
I saw above me that endless skyway
I saw below me that golden valley
This land was made for you and me
Yeah, yeah

This land is your land, this land is my land
From California, to the New York Island
From the redwood forests to the Gulf Stream waters
This land was made for you and me

I've roamed and rambled and I've followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts
And all around me a voice was sounding
This land was made for you and me
Yeah

No existe nadie que pueda pararme
Por el camino de libertad
No existe nadie que pueda hacerme volver
Esta tierra es para ti para mi

This land is your land, this land is my land
From California to the New York Island
From the Redwood Forest, to the Gulf stream waters

de dalt del cel al fons del mar;
tot això és nostre, de veritat.

Déu va passar-hi en primavera
i tot cantava al seu pas
i canta encara la terra entera
i canta que cantaràs.

Aquesta terra és la nostra terra,
de la muntanya fins a la vall,
de dalt del cel al fons del mar;

de dalt del cel al fons del mar;
tot això és nostre, de veritat.

I és nostre el cel, i és nostre el mar
i aquests turons i aquestes valls

de dalt del cel al fons del mar;
tot això és nostre, de veritat.

matteo88 - 24/2/2009 - 12:02

E quel giorno, mentre cantavamo "This Land Is Your Land" ho guardato Pete.

Poi gli ho chiesto: "Come vuoi affrontare 'This Land Is Your Land'?" visto che sarebbe stata quasi alla fine dello spettacolo.

Sempre.

Traduzione di Lorenzo Masetti
As Pete and I traveled to Washington for President Obama’s inaugural celebration, he told me the — he told me the entire story of "We Shall Overcome," how it moved from a labor movement song and, with Pete’s inspiration, had been adopted by the civil rights movement.

And that day, as we sang “This Land Is Your Land,” I looked at Pete. The first black president of the United States was seated to his right. And I thought of — I thought of the incredible journey that Pete had taken. You know, my own growing up in the ’60s, a town scarred by race rioting, made that moment nearly unbelievable. And Pete had thirty extra years of struggle and real activism on his belt. He was so happy that day. It was like, Pete, you outlasted the bastards, man. You just outlasted them. It was so nice. It was so nice.

At rehearsals the day before, it was freezing. It was like fifteen degrees. And Pete was there, he had his flannel shirt on. I said, “Man, you better wear something besides that flannel shirt!” He says, “Yeah, I’ve got my long johns on under this thing.” I said — and I asked him, I said, “How do you want to approach ‘This Land Is Your Land’?” as it’d be near the end of the show. And all he said was, “Well, I know I want to sing all the verses. You know, I want to sing all the ones that Woody wrote, especially the two that get left out, you know, about private property and the relief office.” And I thought, of course, you know, that’s what Pete’s done his whole life: he sings all the verses all the time, especially the ones that we’d like to leave out of our history as a people, you know?

At some point — at some point, Pete Seeger decided he’d be a walking, singing reminder of all of America’s history. He’d be living archive of America’s music and conscience, a testament of the power of song and culture to nudge history along, to push American events towards more humane and justified ends. He would have the audacity and the courage to sing in the voice of the people.

Now, despite Pete’s somewhat benign grandfatherly appearance, you know, he is a creature of a stubborn, defiant and nasty optimism. He carries — inside him, he carries a steely toughness that belies that grandfatherly facade, and it won’t let him take a step back from the things he believes in.

At ninety, he remains a stealth dagger through the heart of our country’s illusions about itself. Pete Seeger still sings all the verses all the time, and he reminds us of our immense failures, as well as shining a light towards our better angels in the horizon, where the country we’ve imagined and hold dear, we hope, awaits us. And on top of it, he never wears it on his sleeve. He’s become comfortable and casual in this immense role. He’s funny and very eccentric.

The song that — I’m going to bring Tommy out. And the song Tommy Morello and I are about to sing, I wrote it in the mid-’90s, and it started as a conversation I was having with myself. It was an attempt to regain my own moorings. And its last verse is the beautiful speech that Tom Joad whispers to his mother at the end of The Grapes of Wrath. It says, “Wherever there’s a cop beating a guy, wherever a hungry newborn baby cries, wherever there’s a fight against the blood and the hatred in the air, look for me, Mom. I’ll be there.” Well, Pete has always been there.

Grazie in ogni caso.

all'ufficio dell’assistenza sociale,

Kaj orregalo estis grena valo:
Jen vasta mond' por ĉiuj ni.

Jen via mondo, jen nia mondo,
Kun monta neĝo kaj mara ondo,
De la tropikoj ĝis la polusoj.
Jen vasta mond' por ĉiuj ni.

Vagante, spurojn mi sekvis lerta,
Kaj min turmentis soif' dezerta,
Dum mi sopiris, iu voĉo diris:
Jen vasta mond' por ĉiuj ni.

Jen via mondo, jen nia mondo,
Kun monta neĝo kaj mara ondo,
De la tropikoj ĝis la polusoj.
Jen vasta mond' por ĉiuj ni.

Mi la okulojn ŝirmis per mano,
Kaj mi vidis ondojn de l' oceano,
La suno dronis kaj iu voĉo sonis:
Jen vasta mond' por ĉiuj ni.

Jen via mondo, jen nia mondo,
Kun monta neĝo kaj mara ondo,
De la tropikoj ĝis la polusoj.
Jen vasta mond' por ĉiuj ni.

Jen vasta mond' por vi,
Jen vasta mond' por mi,
Jen vasta mondo por ĉiuj ni.

Versione spagnola di Sonia De Los Santos
dall'album Mi Viaje: De Nuevo León To The New York Island
(2015)

Sigo caminando y no me detengo

Pidiendo ayuda veo a mi gente

TRANSLATION:

I wandered into a free country
Out of the desert, as though from Egypt,
Looking for a new Jerusalem,
This is a country for me and you.

This is your country,
This is my country,
From California to Ellis Island,
From the Great Lakes to the wide seas,
This is a country for me and you.

I walk over mountains and valleys
Surrounded by sweet voices.
The streams murmur, the birds sing:
This is a country for me and you.

I see a big wall with a sign that warns:
If you want to enter, it says it’s forbidden
But on the other side, it says nothing,
That is the side for you and me.

I go wandering, the sun above,
But evil winds are blowing dust,
Through the haze, I hear singing:
This is a country for me and you.

On wet streets, in deep shadows,
I see people begging for change.
To see such poverty, I wonder
If this is a country for me and you.

There’s no one who can stop us,
Or forbid us the paths of freedom.
There are no barriers, if we are united.
This is a country for me and you.

Rielaborazione italiana di #iosonomoka dall'album eponimo (2022)
moka
dalle strade d’Oklahoma, fino a quelle dell’Emilia

contra os tiranos do meu país

Dos meus passados, bendita terra
nai adourada da minha nai
creba as cadeias que te assovalham
e cingue a croa da libertá

Cantai galegos o hino gigante
dos povos ceives dos povos grandes
Cantai galegos a ideia santa
da independência da nossa pátria

Caste dos celtas esperta aginha
ergue do fango da escravitu
Pátria da ialma, teus ceives cantos
encham o mundo de norte a sul

Cantai galegos o hino gigante
dos povos ceives dos povos grandes
Cantai galegos a ideia santa
da independência da nossa pátria
Cantai galegos a ideia santa
