This is a story - one of millions - about the misery of forgotten war veterans.
Mä tänään voisin olla kunnon kansalainenkin
Mutta desperado musta tulikin
Faija tietä pitkin laittoi kun mä täytin kymmenen
Häntä enää syytä en, olen kuudenkymmenen
Enkä paljon piittaa, kuinka vanhenen
Se noin vain riisti multa lapsuuden

Mä koulutusta saanut en, en päässyt ammattiin
Mutta sotaan kyllä muakin tarvittiin
Mä ammuin monta miestä joita tuntenut mä en
Aika sodanjälkeinen musta teki tällaisen
Matkalippuun teiltä markkaa pyytelen
Jeesus, kuinka pelkään, palelen

Nyt olen itsenäinen kansalainen itsenäisen maan
Ihan itse nöyryytykset kestää saan
Toisen käden tempas isänmaa ja paljon muutakin
Minut laittoi reserviin, unohduksen masuuniin
Pientä palkkaa sentään joskus toivottiin
Kun noin vain meiltä nuoruus riistettiin

Mä olen desperado, henkipatto kurjan kaupungin
Joskus mietin, keiden vuoksi taistelin
Periaatteessa jo ruumis, mutta elän kuitenkin
Minut tunnet sinäkin, vaikka kiellät tietenkin
Olen historias mustin leimasin

Mä en tiedä minne ensi yönä pääni kallistan
Taas kylmä näyttää yöstä tulevan
Pohjantähti vilkkuu ystävyyttään ylle maailman
Ja hän nukkuu kinokseen, puhtaan sinivalkoiseen
Yhteiskunta maksaa matkan viimeisen
Ne noin pois veivät lapsen vanhenneen

AN UNKNOWN SOLDIER

Today, I could be a decent citizen
instead of the desperado I've become
My old man showed me the door when I was ten
Now sixty, I'm not blaming him any longer
and I don't much care how I will grow old
Just like that he deprived me of my childhood

Didn't get education, didn't find my trade
but for war I was found fit
I shot dead many men I didn't know
The time after war made me how I am
Reaching out my hand for a dime
Jesus, how I'm scared and cold

Today, I'm a free citizen of a free country
and free to put up with humiliation
An arm and more I lost for this country
Now put in reserve, banished to oblivion
with no hope of restitution
Just like that they deprived us of our youth

I'm a desperado, an outlaw of this miserable town
Sometimes I wonder for whom I've fought
I'm practically a corps but still alive
You know me although you say you don't
I'm the darkest page of your history

He doesn't know where to find shelter
for another cold night coming
With the North Star friendly twinkling over the world
he falls asleep in a pure white bank of snow
His final journey is paid for by the state
the final journey of a child grown old
