Hirsh Glik.
Hirsh Glik.

"Recorded for the Jewish Historical Commission, Munich, 1946. Performed by Betty Segal, accompanied by Akiva Daykhes on the accordion. The song appears in Lider Fun di Getos un Lagern (1948: words – p. 345, melody p. 428), in Mir Zaynen Do (1983, p. 88) with English translation, and in Min Hametzar (1987, p. 96) entitled, “A Song for the Woman Partisan” (p. 178). The song tells of the first attack of the Vilna partisans, the FPO, on a German army convoy. A young woman partisan, Vitke Kempner, and the partisan Itzik Matskevich threw a grenade on the convoy, damaging it. The song describes the woman partisan in her coat and hat, her beautiful face and her heroism. According to the song, she managed to stop the convoy with a small pistol. She then came back to the forest filled with delight by her small victory, and that of the Jews of the ghetto, over the wicked enemy." - Heartstrings - Music of the Holocaust / Yad Vashem of Jerusalem

Magra consolazione

“Glik, in this song, commemorated the dead of two Vilno partisans - Itsik Matskevitsch and Vitke Kempner, who, in 1942, launched the first attack of the partisans of the Vilno ghetto, against the German army, blowing up an ammunition column on the outskirts of the city.”

CANZONE PARTIGIANA
CALMA NOTTE STELLATA

Tranquilla, la notte è stellata
e il gelo ha morso forte.
E tu pensi ancora, come ti ho insegnato
a tenere in mano una pistola.

Una ragazza, una pelliccia, un berretto
e tiene una pistola, ferma, in mano.
Una ragazza dal viso dolce
ferma l'autocolonna dei nemici.

Mirato, sparato e colpito
la la sua piccola pistola.
Un'auto piena di armi
ha fermato con una pistola.

Il giorno dopo, sgattaiolata dal bosco
con ghirlande di neve sui capelli
è orgogliosa di una piccola vittoria
per la nostra nuova, libera generazione.

SILENT, THE STARRY NIGHT

Silent, the starry night,
And the frost was sharp and crisp.
Do you remember when I taught you
How to use an automatic pistol?

A girl in a short coat and and a beret,
Holding her pistol firmly in her hand,
A girl with a face as soft as velvet,
Watching for the enemy’s caravan.

She aimed and shot and found her mark,
with hen little pistol.
A truck loaded with ammunition,
She stopped in its tracks with one shot.

At dawn we crept out of the woods,
with snow garlands clinging to her heir,
Encouraged with our little victory,
For our new, free generation.

SILENCE, THE NIGHT IS ALL BE-STARRED

Silence, the night is all be-starred
And the frost burned strong.
Do you remember when I taught you
To hold a machine-gun in your hands.

A lass, a fur jacket and a beret,
Holding a pistol tight in her hand,
A lass with a velvet face
Watches over the enemy's caravan.

Aimed, fired and - hit,
With her dear little pistol,
She stopped a car - a nice one full of arms -
With one bullet.

At daybreak, she crawled out of the woods
With snow garlands on her hair,
Encouraged by the precious little victory
For our new, free generation.

Literal translation: Jordan K. (not very singable)

"I owe you guys a lot of translations to songs as I'm probably one of only a few users of this site who knows Yiddish, I'm going to send you a lot more once I have winter break from school in December, anyway I felt it was a real shame that there was no English translation to this so I'm posting one. I'm going to combine my own translation of this song with another from a book, not for singing quality but for meaning (IE only the original is really singable anyway since it works in meter and has the translation). Also, the translation of Zog nit keymol is terrible (it's the normal English translation you find, it's "never say you walk the last (meaning your last) road" not "never say there is only death for you". I can't read Italian but I can see from my knowledge of Spanish that the Italian translation got this right and the English didn't. Oh well. Also, a few parts of your Yiddish text (not the transliteration which is fine) are off in this song, (IE a d and g reversed etc), I'll send you the corrections at a later time."

[RV]
[STILL THE NIGHT IS STARRY]

Still (silent) the night is starry
And the frost burns strong
Do you remember how I taught you
to hold a gun?

A girl, in fur coat and beret
holds a pistol resting in her hands
a girl with a velvety face
spies (guards against) the enemies caravan.

Aimed, pulled trigger, and struck
did her small pistol
An auto filled with weapons
Was taken out by her shot.

At dawn, she crawls out of the forest
With snow in garlands on her hair
Encouraged by the small victory
For our new, free generation.

[RV]

I'm sorry, I don't speak Italian, but I love this song -Shtil die Nacht - and had no idea there was an Italian version of it. I grew up singing only the Yiddish version. I was hoping you could send me the English version. I know there is one, but I can't remember the words. Thank you so much,
Danielle

Grazie mille,

Danielle)

Hi Danielle. The italian version is just a word for word translation. We will look for the English version and let you know

For the following texts:

ferma l'autocolonna dei signori.

Mirato, sparato e colpito
la la sua piccola pistola.

- 1) Why "Signori" in the Italian?
It should be the equivalent of "Enemy":
= nemico, avversario

- 2) duplicate "la". should be "con la sua ..."

========================

Note that the Yiddish text is full of mistakes in spelling - and thus, also the transliteration. I was researching this song, and found the same corrupt version on other sites. I'll send you an update as soons as I prepare it.
