Testo e musica di Pippo Pollina
Dall'album Il giorno del falco
Lyrics and Music by Pippo Pollina
From the album Il giorno del falco

This song, in my opinion among Pippo Pollina’s masterpieces, was written for the 10th anniversary of Chernobyl nuclear disaster. April 26, 1986: the world finally realizes that nuclear energy, even for “civil” use (guess then how much of the energy produced in the nuclear plants all around the world is really used for “civil use”…), is not “safe” at all, as a horde of authoritative personalities springing up like mushrooms still tries to persuade us.

This song is by its very nature an antiwar song. Antimilitarist and antinuclear struggle are inseparable sisters, at any level and in any country. It’s just what Pippo Pollina points out in the splendid two final lines of the song, where he speaks of soldiers (firemen, military, civilians) who, immediately after the disaster, were sent to death. They too were sent to war and, like in any war, like in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, thousands of civilian victims were claimed. Destruction, deserted places, death.

(Riccardo Venturi)

Dove sei?
Uomo, dove sei?
A chi hai reso il tuo coraggio?
Alla ricchezza e al suo miraggio?
Siamo solo disperati esseri stanchi,
non possiamo andare avanti...

Dove sei?
Uomo, cosa fai?
Hai venduto la tua casa,
la tua donna, la tua rosa,
siamo l'ombra del disprezzo
del potere ad ogni prezzo,
uomo, dove te ne andrai?

Guarda fuori adesso, il sole brucia l'orizzonte,

Dove sei?
Uomo, dove sei?
A chi hai reso il tuo coraggio?
Alla ricchezza e al suo miraggio?
Siamo solo disperati esseri stanchi,
non possiamo andare avanti...

Dove sei?
Uomo, cosa fai?
Hai venduto la tua casa,
la tua donna, la tua rosa,
siamo l'ombra del disprezzo
del potere ad ogni prezzo,
uomo, dove te ne andrai?

TSCHERNOBYL ZEHN JAHRE DANACH

Was machst du, Mensch?

Was machst du, Mensch?
Hast Haus und Garten und deine Liebste verkauft,
wir sind Schatten unserer eigen Verachtung,
Opfer der Macht um jeden Preis,
wohin, Mensch, willst du jetzt gehen?

CHERNOBYL TEN YEARS LATER

How dark is the afternoon, here northeast of the world,
A wind's blowing and never calms down.
If only this strange smell coming from up there
Were sulphur hanging to southwest wind gusts.

We've been let alone thousands of years since the radioactive dawn,
But I will grow my children by the river,
And if the earth refuses its fruits, flowers and its dew
I won't leave from here, I will revive.

Where are you?
Man, where are you?
What did you give your courage for?
For wealth and its mirages?
We're tiren and in despair,
We can't go on...

Where are you?
Man, what are you doing?
You sold your home,
Your woman, your rose.
We're the shadow of contempt,
Of power at any cost,
Man, where are you going?

Look outside now, the sun is burning the horizon,
And the shrubs are withering more and more...
Thousands were sent to the reactor like to front,
Poor, unaware soldiers you won't see anymore.

Where are you?
Man, where are you?
What did you give your courage for?
For wealth and its mirages?
We're tiren and in despair,
We can't go on...

Where are you?
Man, what are you doing?
You sold your home,
Your woman, your rose.
We're the shadow of contempt,
Of power at any cost,
Man, where are you going?

Ciao Riccardo,

A Voice from Dead Pripyat, by Adolph Kharash (Science Director, Moscow State University): su questa pagina

ПРИПЯТИ (Тpиптих)
Любовь Cиpoтa

1

кaк переceлить, пo домy бoль, пoвepьте, невозможно!
Oнa в cepдцax биеньем бyдет жить,
нaш гopoд yдливeнно вoпрошaeт:

нaш гopoд, oпуcтeвший на века.
Taм нaши cны бpeдут, кaк oблака,
Boт и качaют тиxo нa ветвяx
зaмpyт ocиpoтeвшие дoмa,
и oкнaми,
coшeдшими c yмa,
в кoтopый paз
пpoщать бyдyт c нaми!…

3

Пocтояв нaд нашим пeпелищeм,
Taйный cтpax – ocтaтьcя всюдy лишнин
кoмy, может, тaк же вот пpидетcя
.. Mы oбpeчeны oтcтaть oт cтaй
в caмyю cypoвyю из зим…
Bы ж лeтитe!
Toлько, yлетая,
И в кaкиe б paдocтныe дaли
вac – cчacтливыx птиц – ни зaнecлo,
пycть вac oт бecпeчности cпacaет
нaшe oпaлeннoe кpыло!…

TO PRIPYAT
by Lyubov' Sirota

1.
We can neither expiate nor rectify
the mistakes and misery of that April.
The bowed shoulders of a conscience awakened
must bear the burden of torment for life.
It's impossible, believe me,
to overpower
or overhaul
our pain for the lost home.
Pain will endure in the beating hearts
stamped by the memory of fear.
There,
surrounded by prickly bitterness,
our puzzled town asks:
since it loves us
and forgives everything,
why was it abandoned forever?

2.
At night, of course, our town
though emptied forever, comes to life.
There, our dreams wander like clouds,
illuminate windows with moonlight.

There trees live by unwavering memories,
remember the touch of hands.
How bitter for them to know
there will be no one for their shade
to protect from the scorching heat!
At night their branches quietly rock
our inflamed dreams.
Stars thrust down
onto the pavement,
to stand guard until morning . . .
But the hour will pass . . .
Abandoned by dreams,
the orphaned houses
whose windows
have gone insane
will freeze and bid us farewell! . . .

3.
We've stood over our ashes;
now what do we take on our long journey?
The secret fear that wherever we go
we are superfluous?
The sense of loss
that revealed the essence
of a strange and sudden kinlessness,
showed that our calamity is not
shared by those who might, one day,
themselves face annihilation?
. . . We are doomed to be left behind by the flock
in the harshest of winters . . .
You, fly away!
But when you fly off
don't forget us, grounded in the field!
And no matter to what joyful faraway lands
your happy wings bear you,
may our charred wings
protect you from carelessness.
