Come Out Ye Cowards ICE

In the warm glow of our People's Songs retreat earlier this month, the chat has been alive with political and musical ideas. When my brother said to me, while frying cabbage, "you know, like ICE, the Black and Tans were ALSO a federal military force being deployed as police", I instantly dropped it into the People's Songs chat and we got to work.

Thus, for this rewrite of Dominic Behan's legendary 1960s Irish rebel anthem "Come Out Ye Black And Tans", credit goes not only to Behan for writing it (and the Wolfetones for popularizing it), but also to my brother, to my dear friend in Minneapolis (Co), to Devon, Mathias, Brittany and Joe for the lively chat, and to Blindboy for this recent podcast episode which goes into a lengthy consideration of the song (and rebel songs in general). And of course, our fallen comrade Renee Nicole Good and every single member of the Minnesota Revolutionary Army (that's who we meant by "MRA").

I was born on a Powderhorn Street
Where the ICE recruitments beat
With a signing bonus fifty-thousand dollars
When we saw them stupid goons
Steal our neighbors from their rooms
We went out into the streets and we all hollered

Come out ye cowards ICE
Come and finally pay the price
Tell your wife how you've been simping for the fascists
Tell her how the MRA [1] made you run like hell away
From the white and snowy streets of Minneapolis

Won't you tell her how you stood
In the way of Renee Good
How she tried to leave, but you were too afraid of her
How she did just what you said
So you shot her in the head
For the crime of being too good of a neighbor

Come out ye cowards ICE
Come and finally pay the price
Tell your wife how you've been simping for the fascists
Tell her how the MRA made you run like hell away
From the white and snowy streets of Minneapolis
