Presto, avanti, in direzione nord!
Marcian legioni,
tuonan cannoni
dal Capo a Couch Behar.
Se cominciava a piovere
e allora s'incontrava
un'altra razza nuova
fosse bruna o bianchiccia

2.
Per Johnny il whisky era troppo caldo,
per Jimmy la tenda sempre gelata.
Georgie li prese sottobraccio: «Volete,
disse, che vada in malora l'armata?»
Marcian legioni,
tuonan cannoni
dal Capo a Couch Behar.
Se cominciava a piovere
e allora s'incontrava
un'altra razza nuova
fosse bruna o bianchiccia

1.
John era insieme a noi come Jim
e Georgie diventò sergente.
Nulla chiedeva l’armata a noi tre:
solo andare a nord o ad oriente.
Soldati e bombe, cannoni e trombe
dal Capo a Couch Behar.
Piovesse oppure no ci si svagava un po’
Con le più strane razze
di uomini e di ragazze
tra teste, braccia e gambe
facevamo un COCKTAIL!

2.
Johnny si lamenta del gin
per Jimmy le coperte sono scarse.
Georgie dice allora: si sa
che l’armata non vuole rovinarsi.
Soldati e bombe, cannoni e trombe
dal Capo a Couch Behar.
Piovesse oppure no ci si svagava un po’
Con le più strane razze
di uomini e di ragazze
tra teste, braccia e gambe
facevamo un COCKTAIL!

3.
Soldati e bombe, cannoni e trombe
dal Capo a Couch Behar.
Piovesse oppure no ci si svagava un po’
Con le più strane razze
di uomini e di ragazze
tra teste, braccia e gambe
facevamo un COCKTAIL!
* Qui Alessio Lega spesso varia liberamente
(es.: "E per l'Afghanistan")

THE CANNONS SONG

1.
Johnny and Jimmy were both on the scene
And George had his promotion order
For the Army doesn't ask what a man has been:
They were all marching north to the border.
The Army's story1
Is guns and glory
From the Cape to Cutch Behar.
When they are at a loss
And chance to come across
New and unruly races
With brown or yellow faces
They chop them into little bits of beefsteak tartare!

2.
Warm whiskey went to Johnny's head
And Jimmy was cold every night,
But George took them both by the arm and said:
The Army lasts forever, and might is right.
The Army's story
Is guns and glory
From the Cape to Cutch Behar.
When they are at a loss
And chance to come across
New and unruly races
With brown or yellow faces
They chop them into little bits of beefsteak tartare!

3.
Now Jim is missing and George is dead
And whiskey has sent Johnny barmy
But blood is blood and still runs red--
They're recruiting again for the army!!
[they all sit there, marching with their feet]2
The Army's story
Is guns and glory
From the Cape to Cutch Behar.
When they are at a loss
And chance to come across
New and unruly races
With brown or yellow faces
They chop them into little bits of beefsteak tartare!
FOOTNOTES

1) This is a rhyming translation, not a precisely literal translation. The first line of the original German really does read "Soldiers live on the Cannons", hence the name "Kanonen-Song". My dad assures me that the English translation does emote the same feeling that a German would feel upon hearing the phrase "Soldiers live on the cannons".

2) The additional line in verse 3 is a Stage Direction for the actors singing the Kanonen Song.

THE CANNON SONG

John was all present
and Jim was all there
And Georgie was up for promotion
Not that the Army
gave a bugger who they were
When confronting some heathen commotion

The troops live under
the cannon's thunder
From Sind to Cooch Behar
Moving from place to place
When they come face to face
With a different breed of fellow
Whose skin is black or yellow
they quick as winking chop
them into beefsteak tartar

Johnny found his whiskey too warm
And Jimmy found the weather too balmy
But Georgie took them both by the arm
and said Don't ever "disappoint the Army"

The troops live under
the cannon's thunder
From Sind to Cooch Behar
Moving from place to place
When they come face to face
With a different breed of fellow
Whose skin is black or yellow
they quick as winking chop
them into beefsteak tartar

Johnny's a write-off and Jimmy is dead
And Georgie was shot for looting
But young men's blood goes on being red
And the army goes ahead recruiting

The troops live under
the cannon's thunder
From Sind to Cooch Behar
Moving from place to place
When they come face to face
With a different breed of fellow
Whose skin is black or yellow
they quick as winking chop
them into beefsteak tartar

SQUADDIES SONG

1.
John was a squaddie and Jim was a toff
And both of them behaved like wankers
Georgie told the sergeant to fight off
And he spent 20 days on jankers
The British army
Will make salami
From Basra to Goose Green
We'll help the foreigner
To meet the coroner
Brown or black or kaki1
A darkie is still a darkie
Yourl can tell by the bodies where the squaddies have been

2.
John got shot when they took Marrakesh
And Jimmy got snubbed by the Argies
Georgie got the shits in Bangladesh
He couldn't take the onion bargies
The British army
Will make salami
From Basra to Goose Green
We'll help the foreigner
To meet the coroner
Brown or black or kaki1
A darkie is still a darkie
Yourl can tell by the bodies where the squaddies have been

3.
John is a goner and Jimmy is gone
And Georgie's six foot under
But their memories will linger on
When the cannonballs roar like thunder
The British army
Will make salami
From Basra to Goose Green
We'll help the foreigner
To meet the coroner
Brown or black or kaki1
A darkie is still a darkie
Yourl can tell by the bodies where the squaddies have been

LE CHANT DES CANONS

moswa1.

Marchan legiones
con sus cañones
de Cap a Couch Behar.
Y aunque les lueva
no hay quien se atreva,
y a cualquier raza,
blanco o negraza,
ellos van y la transforman
en carne de picar.

2.
Juan encontró el whisky calentorro
y Jimmy quiso otra manta más,
el Ejército no puede dar marcha atrás.
Marchan legiones
con sus cañones
de Cap a Couch Behar.
Y aunque les llueva
no hay quien se atreva,
y a cualquier raza,
blanco o negraza,
ellos van y la transforman
en carne de picar.

3.
Juan está muerto, a Jim ni lo coja;
Jorge es un harapo macilento,
pero la sangre sigue siendo roja.
¡Ahí está otra vez el reclutamiento!
el Ejército no puede dar marcha atrás.
Marchan legiones
con sus cañones
de Cap a Couch Behar.
Y aunque les llueva
no hay quien se atreva,
y a cualquier raza,
blanco o negraza,
ellos van y la transforman
en carne de picar.

1.

PIEŚŃ O KANONIERACH

kurtaweilla1.
Marszruta: Cap – nord west.
Brnie artyleria w deszcz,

2.
John się załamał i whisky wciąż chlał,
Jim dostał febry, czy malarii,
Lecz sierżant Georgie, choć także się bał,
Zaklął: Kurwa! Nie zmarnują całej armii?!
Gdzie jest kwatera
Dla kanoniera?
Marszruta: Cap – nord west.
Brnie artyleria w deszcz,

3.
John dostał kulkę, a Jimmy aż trzy,
A Georgie przepadł gdzieś bez śladu.
Czy to szaleństwo, czy może zew krwi,
Że do wszystkich armii świata wciąż trwa nabór?!
Że do wszystkich armii świata wciąż trwa nabór?!
Gdzie jest kwatera
Dla kanoniera?
Marszruta: Cap – nord west.
Brnie artyleria w deszcz,

TYKKILAULU

1.
Jim oli siellä ja siellä myös John,
ja Georgie heitä kersanttina johti.
Vaan ei armeija kysele, kuka kukin on,
kun sen marssi kävi pohjoista kohti.
Hei, solttu täällä
tykkinsä päällä
Kapin kärjestä Behariin.
Hellettä kiroillaan.
Kun heimo kohdataan
ruskea tai musta
niin niistä hakkelusta
taas tehdään, kunnon raakapihvi à la Tartar.

2.
Viskikin on kuumaa, Johnny kirosi.
Vilu Jimmyn taas sai peittojen alle.
Eipä purnata pojat, sanoi kersantti,
se ei sovi tälle armeijalle.
Hei, solttu täällä
tykkinsä päällä
Kapin kärjestä Behariin.
Hellettä kiroillaan.
Kun heimo kohdataan
ruskea tai musta
niin niistä hakkelusta
taas tehdään, kunnon raakapihvi à la Tartar.

3.
Jimmy on kaatunut ja kuollut John
ja Georgie on multaa ja hiekkaa.
Vaan veri yhä vielä punaista on,
yhä kantaa imperium miekkaa.
[Juostessaan he heiluttavat jalkojaan marssin tahdissa]
Hei, solttu täällä
tykkinsä päällä
Kapin kärjestä Behariin.
Hellettä kiroillaan.
Kun heimo kohdataan
ruskea tai musta
niin niistä hakkelusta
taas tehdään, kunnon raakapihvi à la Tartar.
