sencillo
de nuestro pueblo.
Se les preguntará
sobre lo que hicieron
cuando
la patria se apagaba
lentamente,
como una hoguera dulce,
pequeña y sola.
No serán interrogados
sobre sus trajes,
ni sobre sus largas
siestas
después de la merienda,
tampoco sobre sus estériles
combates con la nada,
ni sobre su ontológica
manera
de llegar a las monedas.
No se les interrogará
sobre la mitología griega,
ni sobre el asco
que sintieron de sí,
cuando alguien, en su fondo,
se disponía a morir cobardemente.
Nada se les preguntará
sobre sus justificaciones
absurdas,
crecidas a la sombra
de una mentira rotunda.
Ese día vendrán
los hombres sencillos.
Los que nunca cupieron
en los libros y versos
de los intelectuales apolíticos,
pero que llegaban todos los días
a dejarles la leche y el pan,
los huevos y las tortillas,
los que les cosían la ropa,
los que le manejaban los carros,
les cuidaban sus perros y jardines,
y trabajaban para ellos,
y preguntarán,
“¿Qué hicisteis cuando los pobres
sufrían, y se quemaba en ellos,
gravemente, la ternura y la vida?”
Intelectuales apolíticos
de mi dulce país,
no podréis responder nada.
Os devorará un buitre de silencio
las entrañas.
Os roerá el alma
vuestra propia miseria.
Y callaréis,
avergonzados de vosotros.

APOLITICAL INTELLECTUALS

One day
the apolitical intellectuals
of our land
will be interrogated
by the poorest of people.
They will be asked what they did
while their community
was extinguished,
like a sweet fire, small and alone.
No one will ask them about their fashion sense,
or their long lunches at the faculty club.
No one will want to know about their absurd
attempts to discover "the meaning of it all."
No one will care about or even understand
their economic outlook for
"the current recession."
They will not be questioned on
Greek mythology,
nor their new age remedy for
feelings of alienation.
They'll be asked nothing about their
post-modernist justifications for apathy,
concocted as self-serving lies.
On that day the simple folk will come.
Those who had no place in the
papers, books and poems of
the apolitical intellectuals,
but who produced their
food and clothes, built
their homes and cars,
who cleaned their
offices, raised their children, and cooked
their meals,
and they'll ask:
"What did you do when the poor
suffered, when tenderness and
life burned out in them?"
Apolitical intellectuals,
you will not be able answer.
A vulture of silence
will eat at your guts.
Your own misery
will pick at your soul.
And you will be mute
in your shame.

APOLITICAL INTELLECTUALS

One day
the apolitical
intellectuals
of my country
will be interrogated
by the simplest
of our people.

They will be asked
what they did
when their nation died out
slowly,
like a sweet fire
small and alone.

No one will ask them
about their dress,
their long siestas
after lunch,
no one will want to know
about their sterile combats
with »the idea
of the nothing«
no one will care about
their higher financial learning.

They won't be questioned
on Greek mythology,
or regarding their self-disgust
when someone within them
begins to die
the coward's death.

They'll be asked nothing
about their absurd
justifications,
born in the shadow
of the total lie.

On that day
the simple men will come.

Those who had no place
in the books and poems
of the apolitical intellectuals,
but daily delivered
their bread and milk,
their tortillas and eggs,
those who drove their cars,
who cared for their dogs and gardens
and worked for them,
and they'll ask:

"What did you do when the poor
suffered, when tenderness
and life
burned out of them?"

Apolitical intellectuals
of my sweet country,
you will not be able to answer.

A vulture of silence
will eat your gut.

Your own misery
will pick at your soul.

And you will be mute in your shame.

EPÄPOLIITTINEN ÄLYMYSTÖ

Jonain päivänä
maani
epäpoliittinen
älymystö
joutuu kuultavaksi
tavallisen kansan eteen.

Siltä kysytään,
mitä se teki silloin,
kun sen isänmaa kuihtui
hiljaa
kuin lepattava liekki,
pieni ja yksinäinen.

Kukaan ei kysy siltä
sen pukeutumisesta,
sen pitkistä siestoista
lounaan jälkeen,
kukaan ei halua tietää
sen hedelmättömistä kamppailuista
olemattomuuden
käsitteen kanssa,
kukaan ei välitä
sen suuresta oppineisuudesta talouden alalla.

Kukaan ei kysy siltä
Kreikan mytologiasta
eikä siitä itseinhosta, jota se tunsi,
kun sen joukoissa
joku alkoi kuolla
pelkurin kuolemaa.

Kukaan ei kysy siltä
sen järjettömistä
perusteluista,
jotka ovat kasvaneet
valheen varjossa.

Sinä päivänä astuvat esiin
tavalliset ihmiset.

Ne, joilla ei ole sijaa
epäpoliittisen älymystön
kirjoissa ja säkeisssä,
mutta jotka joka päivä
tuovat sille maitoa ja leipää,
munia ja piirakoita,
jotka ompelevat sen vaatteet,
ajavat sen autoja,
hoitavat sen koiria ja puutarhoja
ja tekevät sille työtä.

Ja he kysyvät siltä:
»Mitä te teitte silloin, kun köyhät
kärsivät, kun hellyyden
ja elämän liekki
paloi loppuun heidän sisällään?«

Mitään te ette osaa silloin sanoa,
te ihanan maamme
epäpoliittisen älymystön edustajat.

Hiljaisuuden peto
kalvaa silloin teidän sisintänne.

Teidän sielunne
rypee kurjuudessaan.

Ja te voitte vain vaieta häpeää tuntien.

LES INTELLECTUELS APOLITIQUES

Un jour,
les intellectuels
apolitiques
de mon pays
seront interrogés
par les modestes
citoyens
de notre peuple.

Ils leur demanderont
ce qu'ils ont fait
quand la patrie
s'éteignait lentement,
comme un petit feu de branches
doux et solitaire.

Ils ne seront pas interrogés
sur leurs costards,
pas non plus sur leurs longues
siestes

Vous, les intellectuels apolitiques
de mon doux pays,
vous ne pourrez rien leur répondre.

Un vautour de silence
vous dévorera les entrailles.
Votre propre misère
vous rongera l'âme.
Et vous vous tairez,
honteux de vous-mêmes.
