Eino Leino (1878 - 1926) is one of the most beloved Finnish poets and definitely the one most frequently cited. His poetry is characterised by mythic tradition, symbolism, harmonious rhyming and a perfect command of the language.

Eino Leino

In Rome, a memorial plate on the wall of the house at 17 Lungotevere Prati reads: "In questa casa negli anni 1908 - 1909 il grande poeta finlandese Eino Leino tradusse La Divina Commedia con amore ispirato alla universalità di Roma."

The message of this poem from 1898 is universal and everlasting: be alert to seeming peace, because it often carries the seeds of unrest.
Vuorilla kulkevat suuret tuulet,
vuorilla lehdet ne lepattaa.
Vuorilla tuulee, vaikka jo hiljaa
nukkuu laakso ja metsä ja maa.
Vuorilla tuulee, vaikka jo hiljaa
nukkuu laakso ja metsä ja maa.

Vuorilla lentävät suuret linnut,
vuorilla kotkat ne kaartelee.
Vuorilla valvotaan, vaikka ammoin
nukkui laakso jo lauluineen.
Vuorilla valvotaan, vaikka ammoin
nukkui laakso jo lauluineen.

Vuorilla valvovat suuret surut,
vuorilla sankarit sotaa käy.
Vuorilla taistellaan, vaikka laakson
pirteissä ei tuulen pilkettä näy.
Vuorilla taistellaan, vaikka laakson
pirteissä ei tuulen pilkettä näy.

UP IN THE MOUNTAINS POWERFUL WINDS BLOW

Up in the mountains powerful winds blow,
up in the mountains trees bow their heads.
Up in the mountains winds restlessly blow,
while all is calm in the valley below.
Up in the mountains winds restlessly blow,
while all is calm in the valley below.

Up in the mountains powerful birds fly,
up in the mountains eagles wheel.
Up in the mountains alert is every eye,
while peacefully slumbers the valley nearby.
Up in the mountains alert is every eye,
while peacefully slumbers the valley nearby.

Up in the mountains powerful griefs prevail,
up in the mountains warriors fight.
Up in the mountains war horns the morning hail,
while the wind stands still down in the dale.
Up in the mountains war horns the morning hail,
while the wind stands still down in the dale.
