Il 27 febbraio 1973 a Wounded Knee, nella riserva indiana di Pine Ridge, nel Sud Dakota, esplose l’ennesima rivolta: i Sioux, appoggiati dall'America Indian Movement, si ribellarono al Governo americano denunciando le misere condizioni di vita della popolazione. I pellerossa, circa duecento con donne e bambini, si asserragliarono nello stesso posto in cui nel 1890 la cavalleria aveva massacrato i loro avi. Piazzarono le tende intorno alla chiesa, trasformarono l'emporio in sala dei congressi e di refezione, piazzarono uomini armati in rudimentali bunker, incrociarono le pipe di guerra, legarono le penne d'aquila alle trecce e organizzarono la resistenza. Il Governo mise in campo tiratori scelti della polizia federale, uomini, mezzi blindati ed elicotteri e circondò la zona.



Per 71 giorni Washington non ebbe potere a Wounded Knee: malgrado l'assedio la comunità indiana si autogovernò con i propri riti e le proprie leggi.
Il 10 maggio, dopo giorni di scontri con due morti fra i pellerosse e alcuni feriti fra le forze dell'ordine, la resistenza cessò. Gli indiani furono costretti ad abbandonare la zona e in cambio ottennero che il Senato aprisse un'inchiesta sulle loro problematiche.



Ancora una volta gli indiani d'America hanno perso la loro guerra contro i bianchi, fidandosi della politica, che, naturamente, li avrebbe traditi. Il nulla di fatto, anzi, avrebbe causato una serie di scaramucce anche negli anni successivi, con alcune vittime e una persistente, irreversibile tensione.
