Mayn yingele
[1887]

MIO FIGLIO

Ho un figlio piccolo,
proprio un bel bambino!
Quando lo vedo, mi sembra
D'avere tutto il mondo.

Però lo vedo di rado
il mio piccolo, da sveglio;
lo trovo sempre a dormire,
lo vedo solo la notte.

Il lavoro mi fa uscir presto
e mi fa rientrar tardi;
straniato dalla mia carne!
Straniato dalla sua vista!

Torno intristito a casa
avvolto dal buio,
mia moglie, pallida, mi racconta
come il bimbo gioca e si diverte,

Come parla bene e è sveglio:
“Mammina, mammina cara,
quand'è che il babbo torna
e mi porta un penny?”

La ascolto e soffro: e deve,
sì, deve esser così!
L'amor di padre s'infiamma:
devo vedere mio figlio!

Gli sto accanto al lettino
e vedo, ascolto, taccio!
Gli muove le labbra un sogno:
“Oh, dov'è, dov'è il babbo?”

Gli bacio gli occhetti azzurri,
si aprono: “Bambino mio!”
Mi vedono, mi vedono
e subito si richiudono.

“Il babbo è qui, tesoro,
ecco un penny per te!”
Gli muove le labbra un sogno:
“Oh, dov'è, dov'è il babbo?”

Resto là, triste e abbattuto,
e sconsolato mi dico:
“Ti sveglierai una volta, bimbo mio,
e non mi troverai più.”

MON PETIT GARÇON

J'ai un petit garçon,
Un fiston charmant.
Quand je le vois, il me semble
Que le monde entier m'appartient

Mais rarement, rarement je le vois
Mon beau petit, quand il est réveillé,
Je le retrouve toujours endormi,
Je le vois seulement la nuit.

Le travail me conduit tôt dehors
Et me fait rentrer tard.
O, étrangère à moi ma propre chair!
O, étrangère la vue de mon enfant!

Je rentre affligé à la maison
Dans l'obscurité,
Ma femme pâle me raconte vite

"Oh maman, gentille maman,
Quand revient, avec un penny pour moi,
Mon gentil, gentil papa?"

L'amour paternel s'embrase:
Il faut que mon enfant me voie!

Je me tiens près de son lit
Je vois, j'entends, je me tais,
Un rêve fait remuer ses lèvres:
"Oh où est, où est papa?"

J'embrasse ses yeux bleus,
Ils s'ouvrent "O, mon enfant!"
Ils me voient, ils me voient,
Et se referment aussitôt.

"Ton papa est là mon chéri,
Un penny, tiens, pour toi!"
Un rêve fait remuer ses lèvres:
"Oh où est, où est papa?"

Je reste blessé et triste,
Amer, et je me dis:
"Quand tu te reveilleras un jour, mon enfant,
Tu ne me trouveras plus là."

MY LITTLE BOY

I've got a little boy,
A really fine son!
When I see him, it seems to me
The whole world is mine.

But seldom, seldom, I see him,
My beauty, when he's awake,
I always find him asleep,
I see him only at night.

Work drives me out early
And lets me back late;
O, strange is to me my own flesh,
O, strange the look of my child!

I come home sadly,
Wrapped in darkness
My pale wife tells me soon
How fine the child does play,

How sweet he talks, how cleverly he asks:
"Oh mummy, kind mummy,
When does come and bring me a penny
My good, good daddy?"

I listen to this and it ails me -it must-
Oh yes it must happen!
The fatherly love is set afire:
My child must see me!

I stand by his bed
And see, and hear, and stay silent.
A dream makes his lips move:
"Oh where, where is daddy?"

I kiss his blue eyes,
They open, "o, my child!"
They see me, they see me,
And they quickly close again.

"Here is your daddy my darling,
Here's a penny for you!"
A dream makes his lips move:
"Oh where, where is daddy?"

I stay pained and sad,
Bitter, and I think:
"Sometime you'll wake up, my child,
And won't find me there anymore"...

Comunque sto scandagliando a fondo... Ciao!
