Come riportato nelle note di cui alla fondamentale raccolta edita dalla Smithsonian Folkways, ‎Woody Guthrie scrisse questa canzone contro l’imposizione del coprifuoco che in quegli anni era ‎pratica assai comune di gestione dell’ordine in pubblico in molte città del sud contro la popolazione ‎nera, ma anche in California contro le masse dei lavoratori migranti.‎
