live

Dedicated to Joan's husband, David Harris, at the time in prison as a conscientious objector.

David Harris and Joan Baez
In my heart I will wait
by the stony gate
and the little one
in my arms will sleep.
Every rising of the moon
makes the years grow late
and the love in our hearts will keep.
There are friends I will make
and bonds I will break
as the seasons roll by
and we build our own sky.
In my heart I will wait
by the stony gate
and the little one
in my arms will sleep.

And the stars in your sky
are the stars in mine
and both prisoners
of this life are we.
Through the same troubled waters
we carry our time,
you and the convicts and me.
There's a good thing to know
on the outside or in,
to answer not where
but just who I am.
Because the stars in your sky
are the stars in mine
and both prisoners
of this life are we.

And the hills that you know
will remain for you
and the little willow green
will stand firm.
The flowers that we planted
through the seasons past
will all bloom
on the day you return.
To a baby at play
all a mother can say,
he'll return on the wind
to our hearts, and till then
I will sit and I'll wait
by the stony gate
and the little one
'neath the trees will dance.

Girls Say Yes to Boys That Say No
UNA CANZONE PER DAVID

Nel mio cuore aspetterò
vicino al cancello tra i sassi
e il nostro piccolo
dormirà fra le mie braccia.
Ogni sorgere della luna
farà passare gli anni
e l'amore sarà custodito nei nostri cuori.
Mi farò nuovi amici
e spezzerò legami
e al passare delle stagioni
noi costruiremo il nostro cielo.
Nel mio cuore aspetterò
vicino al cancello tra i sassi
e il nostro piccolo
dormirà fra le mie braccia.

E le stelle nel tuo cielo
saranno le stelle nel mio cielo
siamo entrambi prigionieri
di questa vita.
Per le stesse acque torbide
passeremo il nostro tempo
tu, i condannati e io.
C'è una bella cosa da sapere
al di fuori o dentro
per rispondere non dove
ma solo chi sono.
Perché le stelle nel tuo cielo
sono le stelle nel mio cielo
siamo entrambi prigionieri
di questa vita.

E le colline che conosci
rimarranno per te
e il piccolo salice verde
resisterà sicuro.
I fiori che piantammo
nelle stagioni passate
sarano tutti fioriti

LIFE IS SACRED

The fact is that I'll spend three years of time in jail
The fact is that that's very small

The fact is that you and I live in the midst of a society
Which does much more than send people to jail

We live in a society that's become synonymous
Not simply with sending people to jail
And not simply with starving people all around the world
Not simply with the most devastating tools of destruction
That mankind has ever known
Not simply with the pillaging and rape of an entire landscape
We live in a society that beyond all those things
Has become synonymous with death itself

Which is why I myself, and many people like me
Are going to spend a lot more than simply three years in prison
Not because we simply violate the law
There are thousands upon thousands of law violations
The question is not simply law
There's a much more basic principle that's been violated

Beyond all things, the life of a man is that man
And beyond all other things, every man has an indigenous right
To live, and to exercise life
If there is one thing I'll leave behind
It's a very simple statement that I'll close with

Which is that there's no direction to go but forward
There's no place to run, there's no place to hide
There's only one way that you and I will get out
There's only one way that you and I will see the things we want to see
And that's to build them, and that may be a painful process
That may be a process in which any number of people
Expend any amount of energy
That may be a process where you and I
Will have to endure any number of things
That don't seem to us to be pleasant

But it must be done
It must be done
For a very simple reason
The simple reason is that life is sacred
